We all see amazing game/film trailers all the time. But what goes into making animation for a single shot in a trailer? For the recently announced #Glassbreakers game, I helped by creating custom animation for the trailer's climax shot and handed it off to the killer team who produced the trailer. - We started by planning/animating a swooping camera that would bring you in low, into the action with a slow-mo effect towards the end. - I posed the 6 characters in a way that felt equally compelling for each character, but also worked well together. No character could stand out too much. After some back-n-forth with the team, we ended up changing the Cleric's pose before animation began. (Cleric’s final pose was done by Jason Robertson) - I animated each character in separate files, being mindful of the screen real estate for each. - I added them all into the same scene so I could make final edits for placements. - I exported all 6 animations as well as the camera animation for use in Unreal. - Our VFX guru, Justen, made a sequence inside the game level where we could kick-off the custom animations from. - Justen added some modified in-game VFX and matched the rough time-slow effect I had in my maya scene. - Chris Alderson, studio art director, screen captured the runtime playback of the sequence and handed it off to our wonderful video expert, Lee Ann Holt. Behind the scenes: For the game cover animation, I utilized Spark AR to develop a 2D animation with VFX effects and create a tracking design. To create a 2D animation using Spark AR, follow these steps: 1. Open Spark AR Studio and start a new project. 2. Import the images or illustrations you want to animate. 3. Arrange the images in sequence to form the animation. 4. Use the animation timeline feature in Spark AR to set the timing and duration for each image. 5. Enhance the animation by applying VFX effects like particles or filters. 6. Add a tracking design to ensure the animation follows the movement of the game cover. 7. Thinking Like An Animator: "Oooh, Unreal Engine 5.4 has all these awesome, thrilling new character animation tools! I can use those to make this Mixamo animation of climbing stairs match the height of the stairs in the "Ithris Cemetery" demo scene!" <Queues up 45 minute deep-dive> Thinking Like A VFX Artist: "Oh, I can scale these steps so the height matches this Mixamo animation".

Started work on the sound. The way the script works is each category has a sound that plays in random order to stop repeating sounds on a specified frame of animation. Interestingly in Unity the way animation events work is exactly the same as Unreal Engine where you can call a function on a frame of animation. And when you have a script that's on the same layer as the animator all your parameters can be setup (linking sounds and an audio source) then you can directly call the function in the animation event. The hard part is next. Multiple impact SFX and VFX for different materials. Im thinking i could probably get away with an enum that is attached as a script on a materials surface. So each object has a different surface. I know that each level is going to have a different environment (desert, snow, forest, ocean, zero gravity etc) so hard coding those biomes as enums would be more than enough.
