Studying Politics and Philosophy at Lake Forest College | Aspirations in Policymaking and Government
An article I read recently from Politico titled ‘The George Santos Saga, Kevin McCarthy Implosion and Marjorie Taylor Greene Circus’ is the kind of journalism at the nexus of political sensationalism and clickbait media. Not attaching here so that it receives no more attention than it deserves—look it up if inclined. It’s important that this particular variety of journalism (i.e. a list of this year’s bizarre moments in Congress) receives the cold-shoulder from those who want to stay informed not at the expense of critical analysis of our political and governmental affairs. Rep. Jamaal Bowman pulling the fire alarm on Capitol Hill: ❌ Rep. Jamaal Bowman introducing the Fair College Admissions for Students Act: ✔️ With the quality of news media in the U.S. denigrated as it is, let’s save reductionist, entertainment-driven “Top 10s” for TikTok or Instagram and not written news publication. We don’t need ‘bizarre moments,’ we need genuine reporting. No thanks, Politico. If you’re looking for breadth on an issue, try reading the same story from multiple different outlets. You’d be surprised that even the most polarizing mainstream sources such as Fox or CNN fill in gaps where the other doesn’t. Increased clarity can be gained from reading a variety of perspectives (shocking, I know). If you’re looking for just the facts with emphasis on minimization of bias, try sources such as Ground News or AllSides. And finally, written media and televised media are two completely different mediums. Read the news, refrain from watching it. This year, let’s confidently strive to be more informed in an era where the lines are becoming increasingly blurred. Thanks for tapping in. #media #journalism #publicpolicy #politics #communications

As Thom Hartmann has once again written, "yellow" journalism has historical roots that we must reconsider in our actions to control the lies, misinformation and other malpractices followed in social media and the press, i.e. Fox News. "After Reagan ended enforcement of the Fairness Doctrine in 1987, radio and TV stations were no longer burdened by the requirement to “program in the public interest” to maintain their broadcast licenses; all three major TV networks moved their news divisions — which had universally been losing money because of the requirement for “real news” — under the arm of their entertainment divisions, where they remain to this day and have now become significant profit centers." Reagan's Presidency has been over and over shown to be the source of so many problems we face today with his belief that government was the "enemy". Government is not the enemy, it is the source of guardrails that protect people from the abuse of wealth and power that sees nothing but more wealth and power in its greedy efforts to grow. Most of Reagan's decisions have to be overturned and this will take a very active President to sell the country on actions that are necessary for our well-being. #democrats #republicans #president #politic #journalism

https://pressthink.org/ Let’s look at the characteristics of fascism and whether they define MAGA Republicanism. There’s a cult of personality. Check. There’s demonization of “outsiders” as a threat to the culture’s survival. Check. There’s the mindset that political opponents pose such a danger that stopping them justifies all means necessary, including lying and cheating. Check. There’s propaganda overwhelming or extinguishing journalism. Check. There’s coercion of businesses to force submission to the autocrat’s wishes.

WHY WILL THEY VOTE FOR TRUMP? Simple answer: He is a great show and uses an extremely poor but intense vocabulary . The success of extreme ideologies , Isaiah Berlin explains, "lies in its simplicity and not in its truth. The more elementary an ideology is... the more it attracts crowds... It serves as a place of reflection for the masses without culture" ... or he would say since there is less and less "there are more and more takers for an ideology that promises immediate rewards. Perhaps, after having dreamed so much about possible futures, we are heading towards a time when humans will only live in the present. Isaiah Berlin called them Barbarians: “Those who are not curious about where they come from, how they got there, where they are going, whether they really want to go there, and if so, why, and if not… why not. » Yellow journalism is barbarism "I believe, says Thom Hartman, that the largest variable in Americans’ willingness to say they’ll vote for Trump is far simpler: the consequence of yellow journalism. I’m not talking about a simple left/right bias, a political preference held by reporters or publishers and editors of the nation’s major media outlets. While there’s a strong case to be made for billion-dollar corporations and multimillionaire media personalities having a preference for low taxes and deregulation, for example, the bias I’m referencing has to do with spectacle.

Dan Froomkin again provides a clear-eyed appraisal of the challenges for journalism, especially political journalism, in a time when democracy itself is under an asymmetrical partisan attack. The nonpartisan prodemocracy sector in general faces these same challenges. So, what can we learn together with, and from, successful journalistic efforts to resist a determined authoritarian assault on democracy? https://lnkd.in/eqXwWnTK

Important read about the importance not just of choosing stories to pursue, but of newsroom leaders understanding and talking about the reasons why. You bake purpose into newsroom culture.
ProPublica’s mission statement encourages “using the moral force of investigative journalism to spur reform through the sustained spotlighting of wrongdoing.” Recently, that impact has been significant — and a bright spot in a dark media landscape.

When scholars of journalism study the effects of the shrinking press corps, they usually focus on how it hurts civil society. Vast swaths of the country are at risk of becoming “news deserts,” with limited access to reliable local journalism. This state of affairs makes it harder for people to make educated decisions and is linked to reduced political engagement, research shows. What’s more, fewer reporters means less oversight of those wielding political and economic power. https://lnkd.in/gPdt2BSY

As a scientist & journalist, I consider impartiality a sacred virtue. I applaud Uri Berliner, whose candid critique of NPR’s flagrant bias & subsequent resignation from NPR are but the latest evidence of how politics (left and right) has thoroughly corrupted today’s news media – not to mention science as well. Journalists at nearly all the major networks & news publications have now been replaced with political activists who take sides in subtle and overt ways in the stories they report. More than ever, you must do your homework, ask tough questions, and demand honest, impartial answers. Stay smart! #sciencewithdrg #media #bias
