STORY TIME from an elder-millennial in sales 🙂 Born-and-bred in Silicon Valley, I earned $10 commission “spiffs” at 19 and facilitated $2 mil deals with #telecom companies at 26. My first job was selling $100 BIRKENSTOCK sandals when I was 16 (who I hear is heading toward #IPO). I moved on and sold $800 suits at Hugo Boss. The same year, I landed my first job in #software sales! For a time, I worked in reservation sales for a private luxury golf club in the South Bay (CordeValle), booking $25K-$100K weekends for tech’s biggest golf enthusiasts and your favorite Bay Area sports teams. I was challenged at all of them; I had fun at all of them. With over 20 years in the sales game, I have this to share with you: It's easy to get caught up in the allure of those 7-figure deals, but don’t forget the power of smaller wins. 💫 December 2013: One of my best (and proudest) sales memories. I have many great memories from working in sales, both as a sales rep and as a sales leader. Many monthly quotas were reached on the last day of the month, sometimes on Saturday evenings, even Sundays. A few times, we made it with just a couple of minutes to spare 😅. But it never felt like a drag. I never felt like I wanted to be somewhere else doing something else because I was doing it together with my team, for the team. 𝗧𝗵𝗮𝘁’𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘂𝗹𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝗮 𝗴𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁 𝗰𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲. Ten years ago, I was leading a sales team and we were behind. I mean, 𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘺 𝘣𝘦𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘥. When the month started we made a commitment, within the team, to reach our quota by Friday, December 20th. For context, the whole team were swedes and we were working in Norway, so we were all motivated by being able to go home to Sweden for Christmas and stay there until January, not having return to Norway on December 27th to work that weekend. December started real slow, and all of a sudden it was December 20th. After December 19th we had reached about 70 % of our quota for that month. I know most sales leaders, and sales reps for that matter, would have looked at the situation and accepted defeat. But 𝘢𝘤𝘤𝘦𝘱𝘵 and 𝘥𝘦𝘧𝘦𝘢𝘵 were two words we never used in the same sentence. 𝗜𝘁 𝘄𝗮𝘀 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗰𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲. On that day: 🎉 We closed 30 % of our monthly quota 🎉 Two of the sales reps set new personal records 🎉 The team set a new record for sales on one day I was very proud of my team that evening. The day after, we all traveled home to our families in Sweden and saw each other again in 2014*. 𝗦𝗼 𝗶𝗳 𝗗𝗲𝗰𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝗵𝗮𝘀 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝘀𝗹𝗼𝘄, 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗶𝘀𝗵 𝗮𝘁 𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗽 𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗲𝗱. *𝘮𝘰𝘴𝘵 𝘰𝘧 𝘶𝘴 𝘩𝘢𝘥 𝘢𝘭𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘥𝘺 𝘣𝘰𝘰𝘬𝘦𝘥 𝘧𝘭𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘵𝘳𝘢𝘪𝘯 𝘵𝘪𝘤𝘬𝘦𝘵𝘴, 𝘸𝘩𝘪𝘤𝘩 𝘩𝘢𝘥 𝘢𝘯 𝘦𝘧𝘧𝘦𝘤𝘵 𝘰𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘮𝘰𝘵𝘪𝘷𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 😅 ----- #salesleadership #teamwork #culture #sales
