Testers validating a new release with positive scenarios (developer's could guess) and negative scenarios (developers in shock) #exploratorytesting is what allows you to find more defects beyond the obvious ones. ------------------- I write regularly on Testing| Leadership | Automation | Engineering. The best way to avoid organizational problems between testers and developers is to put them under the same administrative unit. This would emphasize their common goals and improve collaboration and communication between the teams.
How will a conversation look between testers and developers if we start asking for unit test results before merging their code into main branch to start testing. Most of the time we will end up saying "Okay, Just Go!!" #fridayfun ------------------- I write regularly on Testing| Leadership | Automation | Engineering. 🎄 𝗵𝗲 𝗔𝗱𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝗘𝗻𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽: 𝗗𝗮𝘆 𝟮𝟯: 𝗠𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗲𝘀 𝗮 𝗻𝗼𝗻-𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘁 😱 Does your team dread releases? 😰 Are complex manual steps and simultaneous component deployments causing anxiety? These are all signs that your team might be significantly under-investing in release engineering. Not investing in release engineering can lead to high failure rates, high cost of releases and encourages your team to become risk averse. The key approach to making releases a non-event is through Continuous Delivery (CD). To alleviate these issues, Continuous Delivery offers a solution, but it's not without its challenges. What's worse than manually shipping unstable and buggy code every once in a while? Shipping it very often. 🤦♀️ In order to reap the benefits of CD you need to take a radically different approach to how you develop software. Among other things you will need to invest in the following: - Implement effective monitoring and alerting systems - Achieve a high degree of test automation and coverage - Embrace Continuous Integration (CI) and short lived branches - Adopt the discipline of working in small batches end-to-end - Build full automation - Implement fast rollback mechanisms Above all these: you'll need to build a different culture in your team, a culture where they can take ownership of embracing new approaches with calculated risks. Are you practicing CD in a highly effective way in your team? How did you get there? Share your journey to effective CD practices in the comments. --- 🔔 Enjoy the Advent of Engineering Leadership? "Agile Practices are 268% More Likely To Fail" I am sure you have come across this "report" in one platform or another. It has been widely flooding the tech network for some time already. The pure pile of nonsense this press release is, it has achieved its goal of going viral. Just like the "Developers productivity" claptrap from McKinsey a while ago, this one also gets what it deserves, by Dave Farley. And I think Dave was quite angry about it too 😡 Tune in for 17 minutes that shed light on all of it: propaganda campaigns, crystal balls, statistical hoaxes, double standards in regards to business and engineering, fairies, suggestions to learn how to type faster to increase productivity as well as basic ignorance about what SW Engineering is and how real work works. We have discussed this hogwash of an article with Peter Caron and Renato Todorov, but Dave put it in a much more quotable way! #nonesense #softwareengineering #engineering #leadership #management
