A friendly advice to our young workforce entering the job market: Do take internships! Internships are great opportunities to put theory into practice, bridging the gap between classroom learning and real-world application. Beside your professional experience, you will get the sense of what is actually working in your profession, having responsibilities and people relying on your capabilities and knowledge You will get to know the work culture and work ethics, expand your network not only with professionals from your field and create a sense of consistency and discipline. The internship might serve you also as guideline on what you actually want to focus more in your studies and what you like doing!

Any time you take on responsibilities whether its with an internship, part time job or education you must have a conversation with your supervisor as to the time commitment involved and what the expectations are. Internships have been a notorious stomping ground for supervisors taking advantage of the time of unpaid or underpaid interns. It is your responsibility to fulfill the terms of your internship contract. Doing well with regards to those terms will help you earn positive reviews from your supervisor, your college internship coordinator and will eventually help you land other employment and educational opportunities. Going well beyond your internship responsibilities will not exponentially improve your future outlook and will burn you out mentally, physically and emotionally. When you take an internship make sure the goals and time commitment of the internship are clear and do not deviate from them is the best advice that I can give.
