[PDF] US Field Artillery of World War II Steven Zaloga, Brian Delf digsell https://lnkd.in/eQMd-JW7 Determined to learn from the lessons of World War I where it was unprepared and heavily reliant on British and French guns, the US Army developed a whole new generation of field artillery weapons and tactics during the 1930s. Consequently, in World War II it was the clear leader in field artillery. Providing a thorough examination of the many critical innovations and doctrines, and the impact they had on performance in combat, this book demonstrates why US field artillery was so effective in World War II. Innovations featured include the motorization of artillery, which increased mobility; fire direction centers, which … Read More » https://lnkd.in/epURjYkt

The Army’s M109A7 self-propelled howitzers, produced by BAE Systems https://lnkd.in/eaTfT9Sr feature a 39-caliber length M284 155 mm tube manufactured at Watervliet Arsenal. Watervliet Arsenal in New York also developed a 58-caliber 155 mm tube for the Extended Range Cannon Artillery systems and represents the government’s central repository of metallurgy equipment and knowledge necessary to blast 100-pound explosive projectiles 18 miles and beyond. In the case of cannon tube length, which is generally expressed as a multiple of projectile diameter, longer tubes feature greater chamber ignition volume and longer rifling, i.e., the lands and grooves inside the barrel, resulting in longer projectile ranges. More recently, 52-caliber length 155 mm tubes have been proving their effectiveness in Ukraine on systems like the Nexter Systems CAESAR https://lnkd.in/eVD7d7Pw and Rheinmetall/KMW PzH 2000 https://lnkd.in/eC9JPB2R which can fire standard NATO rounds up to 18 - 24 miles and engage targets at distances of up to 34 miles with enhanced range munitions – with excellent battlefield mobility.

Russian artillery units in Ukrain 𝗘𝗻𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗱 𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗳 𝗞𝗿𝗮𝘀𝗻𝗼𝗽𝗼𝗹 𝗹𝗮𝘀𝗲𝗿-𝗴𝘂𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗱 𝗮𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 In a significant advancement for its artillery capabilities, the Russian defense industry has announced the deployment of an enhanced version of the Krasnopol laser-guided artillery ammunition in Ukraine. This new version has a maximum firing range of 25 km, a substantial increase that is set to bolster the effectiveness of Russian artillery units currently operating in Ukraine. The firing range of the previous version of the Krasnopol was limited to 20 km. Artillery has long been a cornerstone of military strategy, and Russia's latest move underscores its commitment to maintaining a technological edge in modern warfare. The upgraded Krasnopol projectile is designed for precision, capable of striking tanks and fortifications with remarkable accuracy. Originally compatible with the latest 152 mm Russian artillery systems, such as the 2A65 Msta-B field howitzer and the 2S19 Msta-S self-propelled howitzer, the Krasnopol has seen a series of enhancements since its inception. Even Soviet-era artillery systems like the 2S3 Akatsiya self-propelled howitzer and the D-20 152mm towed howitzer were retrofitted to fire guided shells. The latest version of the Krasnopol is a testament to the meticulous engineering of Russian specialists, particularly those from the Instrument Engineering Design Bureau, who have fine-tuned the munition's combat capabilities. Announced earlier in August by High Precision Complexes, these improvements have now been realized on the battlefield. Equipped with a semi-active laser guidance system, the Krasnopol projectile hones in on a target illuminated by a laser beam, adjusting its trajectory mid-flight using aerodynamic fins. This system ensures a near-perfect strike, with a deviation of no more than two meters from the target, making it a formidable tool for the Russian army. The deployment of this advanced ammunition is expected to have significant implications on the ground in Ukraine, where precision artillery has become a pivotal element of the ongoing conflict. With its enhanced range and accuracy, the new Krasnopol may indeed reshape the dynamics of artillery warfare in the region. #guidedrocket #guidedammunition #pgm #salseeker #laserguided

This Day In History–21 March 1963: A groundbreaking shift in military strategy unfolds as engineers and production planners embark on a transformative journey to Fort Sill. Their mission? To observe Field Artillery tactics and techniques, laying the groundwork for a revolutionary missile project– the Lance. The Lance project challenges convention by flipping the script on weapon development. Rather than crafting tactics to fit an existing weapon system, the Field Artillery set the criteria and sculpted the weapon to meet those standards. The Lance was a mobile Field Artillery tactical missile system used to provide both nuclear and non-nuclear general fire support to the Army Corps. Designed to attack key enemy targets beyond the range of cannon artillery and to reinforce the fires of other artillery units, the Lance replaced the Honest John system, fielded in 1954, and the Sergeant system, deployed in 1962. It filled the U.S. Army's need for a highly mobile, medium-range, fin-stabilized, all-weather, surface-to-surface missile weapon system. #MilitaryInnovation #LanceMissile #FieldArtillery #KingOfBattle #TBT #TDIH

KNDS (formerly KMW+Nexter Defense Systems) offers the complete range of proven artillery systems. Almost 200 KNDS artillery systems are in service or under contract for Ukraine. Ukraine becomes the 9th user of the PzH 2000, 400 of which have been ordered by several European customers, and the 10th user of the CAESAR, of which more than 600 have been ordered since it came into service. A complete range of artillery systems: The CAESAR has proven to be robust, reliable and easy to maintain as much in counter-insurgency as in high-intensity warfare. These operational capabilities proven all around the world led the CAESAR to become the most ordered modern artillery system. Hence, KNDS has multiplied by three the production rate of the CAESAR to meet the needs of all its customers: today, six CAESAR are produced each month. For the first time, KNDS displays the CAESAR MkII: a new 6×6 chassis with a more powerful engine, an enhanced protection and a cab prepared for the SCORPION combat information system (SIC-S). Ukraine has become the 10th user of the CAESAR. 78 systems are currently under production this year to the entire benefit of the Ukrainian army. More than 600 CAESAR are now in service or under contract: France recently notified KNDS for an order of 109 CAESAR MkII. #military #defense #defence #militaryleak https://lnkd.in/g7P3zmgm
