Neuro privacy! Colorado may have opened the doors to a very important global dialogue by being the first to expand the scope of its privacy law (initially designed to protect biometric data like fingerprints or face images) to also include sensitive neural data. This could prevent companies from hoarding brain activity data without residents realizing the risks. I’m eager to see how this new dimension of the privacy conversation proliferates across the state/federal legislative landscape (on both sides of the Atlantic) and it is definitely worth keeping an eye on, especially for those of you who work at the intersection of technology and policy. I fully expect the European Union, the pioneers/trailblazers in the privacy debate, to update/revise/amend the GDPR to include the Neuro privacy data in the coming months. The most interesting thing in tech: Colorado becomes the first state to pass a privacy law protecting our brainwave data. This is going to become a huge issue as companies start to capture (and sell) more and more data generated by our brainwaves. It’s good to get started on this now.
