I feel sorry for all the Blue Noses out there, as Birmingham City's relegation from the Championship to League One is a classic example of what happens when new business owners, who lack industry knowledge, implement leadership changes that don't make sense. It seems the owners wanted a "name" to attract investors, so they sacked John Eustace and brought in Wayne Rooney, who may have been a great player, but whose managerial career was littered with failures. In the three games before Eustace was sacked, Birmingham had won all three, scoring a total of 12 goals. At the time, I said this sacking was an absolute joke and made by people with no footballing experience. When Eustace was shown the door and Rooney was hired, Birmingham City were sixth in the Championship, coming off three consecutive wins , scoring 12 goals. However, after Rooney's 83 days in charge, they found themselves down to 20th place in the league, losing a total of nine league games during his time in charge It is critical that leaders understand the importance of strategic patience and are aware of the potential risks associated with making hasty leadership changes. It’s been a week since Wayne Rooney, England footballing legend was sacked from his Manager position at Birmingham City. When the news broke, I couldn’t help but think, “Wow, how did this happen? He was such an amazing player, broke all types of different footballing records!” But the more I thought about this, the more I kept thinking about the differences in the skills required to become an effective leader. At Consalia, we often talk about the fact that the very best salespeople sometimes get promoted to a managerial/leadership position. They’re performing so amazingly well that it would only make sense to have this type of sales professional leading the way for the rest of the team. However, similar to what has happened to Rooney, we know that the skills required to be an effective leader are MUCH different to what an individual contributor would have. If I go one step further, we also know that the values required in effective sales leadership are: For the leader - Vision 🔎 Desire to be the best 🏆 For their team - Empowerment 💪 Potential 🤩 And if this is the case, how many of these values are prominent at an individual contributor level? Perhaps the first two, but because of their current position in the organisation the values associated with their team may not be at the forefront of their minds. Food for thought for anyone transitioning into a leadership role this year… 👌
