Trick or Treat (or workplace investigation?)! Some employees really take Halloween to heart and go all out, however, the Society for Human Resource Management recently reminded us that “one employee’s innocent fun might be another employee’s Halloween horror”. This could mean an employee’s behaviour that goes beyond the acceptable or whose costume is considered offensive. SHRM has a few suggestions for companies to try and prevent workplace conduct on Halloween from becoming ghoulish, such as allowing employees who do not wish to participate in workplace festivities to work from home, and to set guidelines around acceptable costumes. The Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire… A moment in our country’s history that was a horrible and tragic event which took place 113 years ago, as of earlier this week. Its occurrence remains a pivotal moment in the history of workplace safety, as the incident claimed the lives of 146 workers in New York City. Following this disaster, the organization that would eventually become the American Society of Safety Professionals (ASSP) was established, thus marking the beginning of organized efforts to improve and fix workplace safety standards. Workplace safety has traditionally been associated with unsafe work practices and hazardous conditions but recently violent acts committed in the workplace are a growing concern. On September 30, 2023, Governor Gavin Newsom signed into law Senate Bill (SB) 553. Imagine trying to get your “family” to conform to company policies and follow procedures. A company culture that is too relaxed makes it hard to enforce rules. Additionally, many people have unhealthy communication habits with their family members. A workplace needs to be one of respect and professionalism and employees need to function within those boundaries.
