Our interns had a chance to ask a group of CHS leaders some questions at our headquarters in Inver Grove Heights, Minn., in a recent panel event. Mary Kaul-Hottinger, Gary Halvorson, Rick Dusek, and Brandon Smith met with summer interns, both in-person and virtually. The discussion covered a variety of topics including: setting career goals, receiving feedback, culture and employee retention and more. "Always be willing to change. Look at the possibilities. Have agility and adaptability. That's the future; things change fast." - Kaul-Hottinger "At a company like ours, you can start in one place and follow a passion to other places that might feed a curiosity or help with your professional development... Challenge yourself and chase your passions. It's all fuel for a career." - Halvorson "Try different experiences to help you figure out what you like and if the company is where you'd want to grow your career. Always be learning and meeting people." - Dusek "There's always cycles in business, good and bad. Be known as a person that leans in, asking ‘How can I help?' People will remember those tough times and how you showed up as a leader to help." - Smith #CHSIncIntern

Ready for the Superbowl? From all of tonight’s event-related content one could read these days, this is the piece that struck me most. Taking the entire staff -including interns, of course- to Vegas is a great way to acknowledge their hard work and contributions. After all, an organization's success is a collective effort, and celebrating as a team is crucial in building the culture that got you there, and that will guide you through those times in which you don´t make it to your own Superbowl. #teamworkmatters

Work for a company that allows time away because they know you’ll be better for them in the long run. Innovation and longevity is not a grind. Work for a company who sees you, not only as an employee, an asset, or a resource. A company that understands that life goes on outside of the 4 walls. Work for a company who values family. Who knows you are irreplaceable at home in times of need. Work for a company who trusts you and provides flexibility. Trusts that you are going to give your all most days, and make up for the times when you can’t. On days where I have no child care, I’m thankful I can keep an eye on my kids from the comfort of my dining room table. Even if this means putting in the late hours to ensure I’m showing up for my family, my team, and my employer. I’m a better employee when I can care for my family during these irregular times. Summer camp will begin and my schedule will go back to normal. But for now, I’ll simply relish in gratitude.

We are heading inexorably toward the end of the year. This is our second to last Nice Guys and Gals of 2023. So, let's get to it. Matt Wolff continues to recognize those people who help others. This week, he nominates, Justin Taylor who shares job postings every week. Stephanie Jacobson puts a lot of thought into her nominations. She wrote me yesterday, "When working at Van Wagner, Daniel Block was our intern, but he became family. And his level of nice is what guaranteed his success. Dan was the first one to contribute when my Little from Big Brothers Big Sisters needed a new computer for radiology school. He got his hands dirty no matter what the project. He texts on holidays and birthdays. And so when I ran into him in the middle of NYC this week and he gave my manager $25 because she lost her wallet and needed cab fare, it was just so...Dan. He's now a leader at Attain, a wonderful father, husband, and as always - the nicest guy." And I'd like to give a shout out to Tom Glick. We had originally planned a road trip to Ithaca to watch Cornell hockey back in March, 2020. This month was the first time since then we were able to make the trek. It was great to spend some quality time with truly one of the nicest people in the #sportsbiz. Have a great weekend, everyone. Please think about nominating someone next week! #people #network #opportunities #networking #niceguy #sportsmarketing
