Delta’s (DAL’s) first 737’s were -200 models leased from Boeing in 1983 in exchange for 11 Lockheed L-1011’s. The airline wanted to acquire a larger fleet of smaller airplanes to give it more flexibility and capability over short to medium range routes in the wake of U.S. airline deregulation. Later, in 1988, a large fleet of ex-Western Airlines 737’s wore Delta’s famous “widget” livery after that carrier was merged into DAL, Here we see 737-232, “N307DL,” an original Delta aircraft on very short final into Los Angeles-LAX in the spring of that same year. Throwback Thursdays are a weekly journey into the past of our industry. If any of you have specific airlines/airplanes you’d like to see featured feel free to “drop us a line” and we will see if we can find them for you. https://lnkd.in/gDXzGaMw To listen to our podcast, read the most recent blog posts, or learn how to get involved with FCAP, go to https://lnkd.in/gScVBhWh. #FCAPinternational #aviationindustry #nonprofitorg #airlineindustry #fellowship #christian #airlinepersonnel #crewlife #airlineenthusiast #faithatwork #HeGetsUs

The Vought V-173 had an unusual planform that led it to be dubbed “The Flying Pancake.” This experimental aircraft had a flat, disk-like shape with two 80HP Continental engines buried in the fuselage (such as it was) that drove two large propellors on the wingtips. It was made of wood and canvas and had symmetric NACA 0015 airfoil. Ordinarily, such a small aspect ratio (about 1.3), one would expect a large amount of induced drag due to tip vortices, but the propellors rotated in the opposite direction, effectively cancelling them out. For pitch control, the aircraft used all-moving stabilators. Flight testing started in 1942 in Connecticut and continued through 1947, ending after 190 flights. One person who flew it was Charles Lindbergh, who found it easy to handle and almost impossible to stall. The aircraft still exists and is at the Frontiers of Flight Museum in Dallas, TX. Although the program proved the feasibility of the aircraft, it never entered development. #airfoil #aspectratio #induceddrag #tipvortices #pitch #stabilators #stall #aeronautics #aviationhistory #aviationhistoryanddoodles

Aviation Historian, Airline History Media Resource, Executive Director (Emeritus) Aviation Hall of Fame & Museum of NJ
For some reason there are not many photographs extant of Pan Am Lockheed l-1011-500 TriStars in flight, despite a not insubstantial fleet. A dramatic exception is seen here as N504PA “Clipper National Eagle '' climbs sharply out of Los Angeles-LAX on the very last day of 1983. In 1986, when the company disposed of its L-1011-500 fleet, N504PA was one of the aircraft that was not transferred to United Airlines as part of that year’s Pacific route sale. The airplane instead went to Delta as N754DL. Interested in legendary Pan Am? Check out my new Tuesday and Friday posts for the Pan Am Historical Foundation at: https://lnkd.in/eJ_ES-RF. Celebrating Wright Brothers Day: A Legacy of Innovation in Aviation Today, we mark Wright Brothers Day! On December 17th, 1903, Orville and Wilbur Wright achieved a feat that seemed impossible at the time: the first sustained, controlled flight of a powered heavier-than-air flying machine. Their groundbreaking achievement at Kitty Hawk, NC fundamentally changed the world, and its impact continues to resonate deeply in our industry today. ✈️ The advancements achieved since that historic day exactly 120 years ago are truly remarkable. From the development of sophisticated airliners connecting continents to the emergence of cutting-edge AI technologies, the industry has witnessed incredible transformations in the last century. And we, as a software provider in this space, are proud to play a role in these advancements. At ASQS, we strive to empower aviation professionals through our innovative software solution #iQSMS. We believe that technology should be a tool for progress, enabling you to optimize your safety & compliance management, reach new heights in efficiency and ultimately contribute to a safer, more accessible aviation ecosystem for all. 🦺 Let us not only celebrate the remarkable achievements of the past but also look toward the future with optimism and commitment, driven by the spirit of innovation that propelled the Wright brothers to achieve the impossible back on this day in 1903! #WrightBrothersDay #FlightPioneers #Aviation #Innovation
