Sometimes I need to stop and remember why we started PHPN, and to remember the reasons why it was so important to start the network. This is the story of what motivates us to do this work: Back in 2020, before the network began, we started the COVID 19: Public Health, Policy, and Culture podcast, sharing stories from around the world, working to convince our community connections that it was not “a hoax” for a political agenda, but was actually destroying the health of communities. The months continued and the pandemic proceeded for another year, and even then, another year…. We began the PHPN at the beginning of 2021 during the worst of the COVID pandemic. We had thought the shutdown and quarantining would be around for 3 months, perhaps 6 months max. In 2021, we were entering the 2nd year of COVID. The public was confused and tired of the precautions. And at a national and international scale, public health information was being sabotaged while misinformation was rampant. We realized that public health professionals needed to find new, creative, and strategic ways to get evidence-based public health information out to the public. This is when the Public Health Podcast and Media Network was born. We realized the potential that podcasting had to transmit underrepresented stories and experiences, not to mention, important public health information. We have expanded this to all forms of social media, websites, and news/blog stories. We encouage creative public health solutions and strategies through the use of podcasting, social media, blogging, and more. With just a cell phone microphone, a social media account, or a blog and a marketing strategy, each of us has the ability to share important health information and education with the public. PHPN was created to support you in sharing your public health message. Learn more about our events, our membership program, networking opportunities, and our podcast/media tutorials. I love these ideas, especially using health literacy skills to help friends and family. From the article: "Use your skills off the clock. As a health communicator, you’re a pro at interpreting medical jargon, but most people aren’t. So use the skills you’ve honed on the job to help someone understand health info. That might look like accompanying a family member to a doctor’s appointment to help them ask questions and take notes. Or maybe you help a friend find quality info about a health issue they’re dealing with — and if you can help “interpret” that info with some plain language explanations, even better! You might be surprised by how much you can help in these situations — and it’s a powerful reminder of why we do the work we do." #HealthLiteracyMonth

This week, Google Health participated in the 77th World Health Assembly (WHA) in Geneva which focused on "All for Health, Health for All." This theme resonates with our health work at Google as we build products, services, and discoveries that work for everyone, everywhere. Throughout many discussions and meetings this week, Google’s Chief Health Officer, Dr. Karen DeSalvo, emphasized the need to ensure our technologies solve the right challenges and problems for consumers, our partners, and society at large. Our goal is for AI to be helpful and enable partners to deliver on their missions in health as well as advance the broader medical and scientific community. A key pillar in this effort is a multi-year collaboration agreement we signed with the World Health Organization last year. This builds on work we did together during the COVID-19 pandemic to connect people to trustworthy information during an unprecedented global health crisis. Some of the ways we have brought that agreement to life since then include: - Adding authoritative information in Knowledge Panels – from the common cold to colon cancer – across more than 80 countries, such as Botswana, Pakistan, and the Philippines. - Building together to enable interoperable data standards to help accelerate the transition towards person-centered care – especially in low-resource settings. - Adopting a set of WHO principles to guide our product development work as we build age-appropriate mental health experiences for teens on YouTube. At a small reception hosted by Dr. Karen DeSalvo, ministers of health from around the world alongside attendees and officials from the WHO joined us to talk about how we can continue to work together to deliver on this mission of All for Health, Health for All. We look forward to what’s to come.

Attending the Digital Health Festival on Wednesday was eye opening. Thank you #DHF for some compelling talks on the importance of governance in digital health, smashing data silos and minding the service journey from first to last touch point. I found some common themes. 🥊A problem shared is a problem better understood. When we share learnings about what hasn’t worked we see common opportunities for the place to start with improvements. ⏳Clinical governance is foundational to supporting fast to community enhancements. Don’t bore your board with the high level data…immerse them in what’s happening on the ground and let the aha moments happen. 💬Digital experiences are both blocking and enhancing service improvements in equal measure. It’s understanding motivations and limitations for those we serve where change starts to happen. Shout out to the festival for offering some silent disco style stages, they offered some respite from in thr mix action. As a recent hearing aid 🦻 user, an interesting benefit of the focused headphone listening gave me a break from ear strain.
