Pleased to be helping out with this great event! I've organized a session called "AI and ML Tools that can be Used to Ensure Research Integrity" with innovators Patrick Starke, Josh Nicholson and Adam Day. There are a number of tools that use artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) that can help publishers screen for research integrity issues. This session will examine three areas that are of major concern to scholarly publishers: submissions from paper mills, detection of manipulated and duplicate images, and the proliferation of retracted science. This session will examine each of these areas through the lens of three different organizations that have developed AI/ML tools used to combat fraud and ensure research integrity. The presenters will provide a general overview of the integrity challenges they are combatting, they will discuss industry initiatives that they have been involved with, and they will discuss the details of how their tools are being used today by publishers and others.

I am honored to have participated as one of the online participants in the Workshop on assessing the impact of Slow-Onset Events, 8-9 November 2023, Bonn. Over 50 experts joined in person, and about 300 participants were following online. The workshop was a step towards addressing a critical knowledge gap in the domain of loss and damage, and there is a continuing follow-up with participants and experts to ensure that together, some constructive measures in assessing the impact of slow-onset events are achievable.
