I just received many kind messages from very nice people congratulating me on a work anniversary . I sincerely thank them all for this nice gesture but it also made me wonder, Is the day we start to work at one place is really an anniversary worth celebrating ?? For a number of reasons I don’t think so. 1. It’s merely a random date for the beginning of a professional relationship with an employer. 2. It’s not personal at all. 3. It will not last forever. 4. Your employer will never congratulate you on that date. For him it’s another ordinary day weather you spent a year or 5 years or even 20 years with the company. An anniversary by nature is the annual recurrence of a date marking a notable event. Thus why do we, employees, celebrate that date and call it an anniversary ? Why don’t our employers also celebrate it ? With all the due respect to all those nice professionals who congratulated me l, but I think we should stop. I believe an anniversary should be called upon much more important personal events on our life. A marriage, an engagement or the birth of a child but not the day we started a new job. What do you think ? 🤔🤔🤔

Here are some ideas for you to build a rapport with your manager: 1. Learn to Respect Their Boundaries: It goes with understanding their work style first. Some managers like regular updates, while others may prefer more autonomy. Also, be mindful of their time and schedule your meetings accordingly. 2. Offer Solutions, Not Just Problems: When presenting challenges or issues to your manager, come prepared with potential solutions or ideas for improvement. This would also inspire them to think about a bright future for you in the company! 3. Celebrate Big and Small Milestones: Is it their work anniversary? Make sure you wish them. Is it their birthday? Maybe a bouquet of flowers would be a sweet gesture. Is it their child's birthday? Taking off some work from their task list would be helpful! Which one of these would you try first? Tell me in the comments!

It didn't hit me until I went to bed yesterday, but happy work anniversaries to me! That isn't a typo. I am celebrating two work anniversaries. Yes, I have one job. Two years ago I joined Stride, and was so stoked to combine my passion for education with my years of experience in TA. I had interviewed across Stride TA team, HR leadership, and one of Stride's portfolio companies. Once I started the role I quickly began supporting not just that portfolio company, but a second, then came Stride corporate and IT roles. I had this great view of so many different business units, and I learned a lot in that year. Throughout that year, while I loved what I was doing, I was experiencing conversations that looked different. One of the portfolio companies I supported was full of innovation, passion, and building. There were conversations happening here I hadn't seen in the corporate world like "if we change this policy/process or procedure what is the impact of psychological safety to our team members?". Ya'll I went to my spouse after that one and said "I found my people." So about 10 months into my role at Stride I began interviewing for the role of TA Manager at Galvanize. Days after I celebrated my first year in Stride I officially stepped into Galvanize, that portfolio company that was full of "my people". So, for the last year, I have been with Galvanize. We sit at the corner of technology and education, providing students a pathway to be software engineers that doesn't involve 4 years of studying and a mountain of debt. I work with the most intelligent, hard-working, driven, and passionate people I have ever worked with in my life. I am challenged every day in a new way and have grown so much in this past year as a human, a TA Leader, and HR Professional. So, cheers. Cheers to being a Stride Employee for 2 years, and an official Galvanizer for 1; cheers to my double work anniversaries!

May marked my 9-year anniversary at Pluralsight. You may know that, during this time, I took a leap in my career by moving from business strategy to People. A pivot into HR wasn't a move I saw myself making, but after almost a decade with the company and 6 years in people management, I've learned a few things: 👉 Embrace the unknown; stepping out of your comfort zone fosters growth. 👉 Being able to adapt is an underrated skill and will always set you up for success. 👉 Cultivating an ownership attitude empowers you to add value in any circumstance. I look forward to many more learnings and would love to know: what's a risk you've taken that's paid off? ⤵
