#3A AIRSHIP RULES COMMENTS TODAY is the last day for public comments on the FAA's new MOSAIC rules for Light Sport Aircraft. I gave some, here is A part of the third. Comment: #1 AIRSHIP ENVELOPE SAFETY CONCERNS by Jesse Blenn This relates to my work on the Lighter-than-air Subcommitee of ASTM. This and my next comment is about the two most glaring safety concerns that I see being overlooked in airship standards, both in FAA P-8110-2 Airship Design Criteria and the ASTM Standard Specification for Design and Performance Requirements for Lighter-Than-Air Light Sport Aircraft F2355 – 14 (22). AIR AND GAS VALVES. In airships, the integrity of the envelope (the lifting gas container) is paramount. There are two main dangers to that integrity. First is the danger of overpressure and possible catastrophic envelope failure (explosion) caused by rapid climbing either from control inputs or wind gusts in storms that may be encountered. Automatic operating air and gas valves are normally expected to avoid that condition, but the present regulations are VERY deficient and need to be changed. I will give details. Again, inflated envelopes and their pressure regulation systems are both the main difference between LTA and other LSA, and also their main source of safety concerns. The present LSA LTA standards are lacking clarity and safety considerations here. The added size and weight of correctly sized gas and air valves is a small amount to pay for the greatly increased safety margin that they provide.

SEAL Aviation was called out to a Lear 45 to remove corrosion that a customer had identified around a static wick base. Upon removal of the static wick, additional corrosion was identified underneath the static wick base. SEAL Aviation then removed the corrosion and coordinated with our NDT team to perform an eddy current inspection and an ultrasound thickness mapping. The SEAL Aviation Team worked with engineering for the repair, installed the static wick base and performed an electrical bonding check.
