So, that’s 2023 wrapped! 🎉 Last year we continued to lead a number of initiatives in West Yorkshire, from Business Volunteering to Youth Engagement Activities. As well as our own projects, we’re also proud to support other socially-focused enterprises including charities, social enterprises, community businesses and similar projects. 🤝 We continued to support new and existing enterprises to reach their goals with expert guidance and/or coaching, and our latest annual report shows just how much we’ve achieved. We helped with the start-up of 45 new enterprises and gave on-going support to 93 existing ones. 🌱 As you can see, this also included support in securing £73,500 in grants that will make a massive difference to the enterprises involved and their community! Through this work 28 FTE jobs were created in the most disadvantaged areas of Keighley alone, and we helped grow 3 business networks to help support and grow local business initiatives. As we enter 2024 with our newly expanded team of Enterprise Coaches through the Business for Good programme*, we anticipate a significant increase in our support this year, with new resources and opportunities for socially-focused businesses in different areas of West Yorkshire🌳. The UK has a vibrant and eclectic arts and cultural sector. However, Arts organisations in the UK face a number of challenges when it comes to raising funds. They must find creative ways to fund their important and impactful work. This may include diversifying revenue sources. One area that organisations can look to develop is the support from the business sector. Collaboration and partnerships with businesses can help cultural organisations overcome some of these obstacles and secure the necessary funding to thrive and fulfil their missions. Neurodiversity in Business (NiB) - the Neurodiversity Charity needs your input to make London the most neuroinclusive city in the world. By creating a long-term strategy for neuroinclusion in London’s businesses, infrastructure, public services, and communities, it is aiming to set the gold standard for cities around the world. Its really tough to be CEO of a charity or community organisation right now. The needs in our communities have increased in volume and complexity, whilst it seems like every possible income stream has been squeezed. Even volunteers can no longer afford to volunteer as the cost of living means they need to work longer hours, or just cant afford to travel to volunteer. Charities and community organisations will have to be agile, innovative, responsive and move fast in the next year. Ever get that sinking feeling when a brilliant nonprofit idea never leaves the ground? It's a common occurrence, and the culprit often boils down to a frustrating chicken-egg scenario: funding. Here's the crux of the issue: Nonprofits Need Funding to Launch: Securing funds allows you to hire talent, develop programs, and establish infrastructure – all crucial for effective operation. Funders Want a Track Record: Donors and grantors typically invest in established organizations with a track record of success. They need to see a clear plan and evidence of impact. This Catch-22 can be incredibly disheartening. Here are some ways to break the cycle: ✅ Focus on Validation, Not Just Fundraising: Before diving headfirst into fundraising, validate your concept. Conduct needs assessments, gather community input, and build a lean business plan. This shows potential funders you've done your homework and have a viable solution. ✅ Start Small: Don't be afraid to begin with a pilot program or limited service offering. Demonstrate your impact with smaller projects to build a foundation for future growth and attract larger grants. ✅ Consider a Fiscal Sponsor. These are organisations who will submit applications and manage grant funds on your behalf, for a fee. This space is especially well developed in the American market however funders like the #MastercardFoundation are building this space in Africa. By being strategic and resourceful, you can overcome the funding hurdle and turn your impactful idea into a thriving nonprofit.
