Be the person who makes things easier, not harder This is the common trait of the best engineers I've worked with across my decade at Meta, Pinterest, and Stanford. Every time you interact with these engineers, you walk away feeling like they moved the ball forward in a helpful way: • They quickly unblock code reviews and launches • They help onboard and educate newer developers • They work within constraints to deliver quality work Making things easier doesn't mean that you simply agree to everything. These engineers still maintain coding standards, advocate for strategy changes, and share constructive feedback. The difference is that instead of simply saying "no", they say: "No, but let me help you fix it. Here are some resources, and here's what I'd do." How is it possible that one Distinguished Engineer (IC9) at Meta can be worth $2,500,000 per year? That is 6x the amount a Senior Eng (IC5) gets paid 🤯 The answer is simple: leverage amplifies their efforts. There are three main ways IC9s have leverage: 1. Write Software No One Else Can - Software itself is high leverage. You can write code once, then copy it across a fleet of machines for no additional cost. At large companies, even changes from a single engineer can have incredible leveraged impact due to scale. These engineers make impactful changes that no one else can. 2. Influencing Large Groups of Engineers - Writing software isn't always the best way to have impact. If you can influence others to write code, you can get a lot more done. Writing code is high leverage, communication is often higher leverage (see attached diagram). 3. Making Large Groups More Efficient - The most impactful engineers' work have compounding effects since they make improvements to tooling or underlying infrastructure that many engineers use. Imagine making 1000 engineers 3% faster. That's like creating 30 more engineers of dev velocity out of thin air. We all have the same amount of time available every week. The best way to have more impact is not to invest more time but to think about how to get more out of it. Even though IC9 is unattainable for most, we can all learn from how they operate to have more impact. If you don't believe me on the IC9 salary, check (levels.fyi). These amounts are ridiculous but seem plausible given the IC7/8 data points show a similar trajectory.
