“Groups who have been historically oppressed tend to draw optimism from other successful people who look like them. That’s one of the reasons why representation is so important” ‼️ - Gary Vaynerchuk One of the biggest takeaways from my summer internship with Google/YouTube was the idea that representation is the strongest currency we have as a society/in business 🪙 Often the value of representation isn’t something that is tangible or can be put into “cold hard facts” 🤔 Yes, some companies do an annual DE&I report but stats aren’t what empower 🫢 Real PEOPLE empower and behind each stat is a face and name 👤 I can say that Google’s BOLD program | “Be bold. A unique undergraduate internship experience to Build Opportunities for Leadership & Development (BOLD)” | was filled with diversity from ethnic/cultural background to major/study of choice. But, as a society we must not take our foot off the gas ⛽️ Someone made an interesting callout which was the idea that most of “Big Tech” is on the West Coast while most HBCUs are on the East Coast 🤔 Take what you will from this but in my eyes, facts like this open my mind/heart to areas of opportunity/growth within the space of DE&I/Representation 🗣️ With the hope of increasing representation of all groups in all areas, happy Wednesday! #representation #humpday #college

Here are 3 lessons I learned from 15 coffee chats with Apple engineers 👇 1) You cannot build trust in an internship. The reality is 10-12 weeks is too short of a time to build rapport. You likely won't have a massive impact, and your reliability cannot be proven. This means one thing... you can only lose it. Make sure to deliver on time, stay true to your word, and be reliable. Without this, your chances of being valued will drop. But... 2) Don't focus solely on your task. There's more to learn as an intern, and putting on the blinders to get your work done is bad news. Take time to chat with people, inquire about the way the company is ran, meet other interns, and explore the tools and resources around your company. Especially at a big company, there are plenty of brilliant minds to pick about anything and everything. Don't waste your opportunity to grow. Speaking of which... 3) For career progression, it is best to be where your leadership is. Having an impact is a given, but it's a baseline requirement to getting promoted. The value of an employee is shown in side conversations, through the way you work, and with relationships. Most of the time the important skills to be promoted come from behavior seen in the office. You need to be where your leaders are so you can get noticed.

Many university students often ask me how I managed to accumulate such diverse work experiences during my studies at Universitat Pompeu Fabra. 💥 The answer is quite simple: 𝗜 𝗺𝗮𝗱𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗺𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆 𝘀𝘂𝗺𝗺𝗲𝗿 𝗯𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗸 𝘁𝗼 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗹𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸. For me, not working during the summers was not an option, I was driven to develop myself professionally. Here's a breakdown of what I did during each of my university summers: ✔ 𝟮𝟬𝟭𝟳 - 𝗜 𝘁𝗼𝗼𝗸 𝗼𝗻 𝗮 𝗿𝗼𝗹𝗲 𝗮𝘀 𝗮𝗻 𝗮𝗰𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝗶𝗺𝗺𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗹𝘆 𝗮𝗳𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗺𝘆 𝗳𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁 𝘆𝗲𝗮𝗿 𝗮𝘁 𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗶𝘁𝘆. ✔ 𝟮𝟬𝟭𝟴 - 𝗜 𝘀𝗲𝗰𝘂𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗮 𝗦𝗮𝗹𝗲𝘀 𝗽𝗼𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝘁 𝗮𝗻 𝗲𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗻𝘆. ✔ 𝟮𝟬𝟭𝟵 - 𝗜 𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗲𝗱 𝗮 𝘀𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗹𝗮𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗱 𝗺𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝗮𝗻 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽 𝗶𝗻 𝗕𝗿𝗮𝘇𝗶𝗹, 𝗳𝗼𝗰𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝗻 𝗕𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗗𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗽𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝗸𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴. ✔ 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟬 - 𝗜 𝗽𝘂𝗿𝘀𝘂𝗲𝗱 𝗮𝗻𝗼𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽, 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗳𝗶𝗲𝗹𝗱 𝗼𝗳 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝗸𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴. Week 1 complete ✅ This past week I started my summer internship at Microsoft as an Explore intern on the Real Time Communication team. I'm eager to learn from such talented colleagues and contribute to innovative projects. I want to give a shout-out to Hong Sodoma, and the rest of the team for being so kind and welcoming! There are a few things that I have taken away that I thought to share: 1.) Navigating a professional landscape let alone a new environment can be difficult. As someone coming from a first-generational background so much is changing. Yet that makes it even equally important to make use of the resources around you. Setting up 1 on 1 ☕️ conversations has gone a long way! 2.) Critical thinking shows up in more places than just a project. For me, 8 hours of work simply isn't enough time to hit ambitious goals routinely. I really have had to lean on thoughtful reflection to evaluate the usefulness of such goals. Crazily enough, approaching situations with no right answer can be thought of similarly 🫨. Challenges and growth await this summer and I can't wait to see how this summer shapes out to be! #intern #microsoft #firstGen #newStart
