The hot take on Techstars pausing #Austin and a lot of good perspective on what might be contributing to that. As a HUGE proponent of Austin and Texas, this is a VERY good read from Mary Ann Azevedo because the input from many of Austin's changemakers aren't criticizing so much as they're (we're) highlighting what needs to change and what can be better.
A bit of my perspective beyond what TechCrunch covers herein? That policy, regulation, and resources, fail(ed) to be put to the best use and very often fail to recognize what's staring us in the face. This is what causes my point that expectations exceed reality - that Austin HAS great appeal, but often falls short of delivering.
We struggle with digital divides, lack of marketing, too few working together, silos, and inequity; to a great extent, money moves in odd directions. When cities throughout the world say, "We want to be like Silicon Valley," or "We want to be like Austin," I'm among the first to reply, "no you don't, let me explain why and let us help you develop what's distinctly meaningful about your region of the world."
Austin remains weird, entrepreneurial, progressive, creative, supportive, and musical; and much more than that to be found (though, finding it requires considering Austin more than downtown, or what it was). Being honest about what doesn't work well is more important than praising what's great because entrepreneurial people rise to the occasion to improve things (at least, we try, as Joah Spearman did) - Austin is hot in the summer, miserable during cedar season, politically frustrating, a little socially inaccessible, a commuter nightmare, and expensive downtown. Yet, at the epicenter of 3 of the largest cities in the country - let's fix things because everyone can thrive here.
Featuring Amalia Lytle, Mitch Goulding, Don Ward, Eric Engineer, and Joah, seems to me like getting us all together for a discussion might help tackle economic/civic/social issues wherever we might find them 🙏
(and, are Mitch and Don right about Houston and Tulsa? ABSOLUTELY)
New from me: Techstars has paused its chapter in the city; it’s not alone in dialing back
