"Most people don't know what my job involves—in fact, many have never even heard of a child life specialist before. I myself stumbled across the career path when a family friend invited me to volunteer for a pediatric palliative care event. I fell in love with the work. ⁠ ⁠ A Certified Child Life Specialist (CCLS) is a person who works with children and their families to help them cope with a procedure or normalize a diagnosis through play and education. ⁠ ⁠ In order to become a CCLS, there are several specific courses one must take at the college level. These include courses focused on child development, and death and dying, along with many psychology courses. CCLSs are most often found in the hospital setting, in inpatient units, or clinics, but we also work out in community programs such as palliative care or hospice teams. To be clear, palliative care is distinct from hospice. ✨👧 The Survey of Well-Being of Young Children (SWYC) 🧑🏽✨ (link below) The SWYC is a comprehensive, first-level developmental-behavioral screening instrument for children under 5 ½ years of age. It was designed to be completed by parents or other caregivers in the context of pediatric primary care visits, but can also be used in other settings, such as early child care and education, home visiting, and preschools. SWYC questions were written to be short, easy to read, and simple to answer from memory. The entire instrument takes most parents 10 minutes or less to complete. As a “first-level” screening instrument, the SWYC is designed to be used as an initial step in assessing children’s risk of developmental-behavioral issues, with positive screens followed up on through further conversation with the child’s caregiver. https://lnkd.in/gdFkJZw
