#LocalNewsMatters Study reveals that trust in Texas local media among the highest in America "As the national narrative grows more divisive, local media stands as a beacon of community trust and engagement," remarks Sam Allcock of PRFire.com. "Our survey underscores the resilience of local journalism and its critical role in providing a platform for diverse voices. It's a clarion call to support and sustain the local outlets that so faithfully reflect America's rich journalism." An investigation into the public's perception of local news reveals a nuanced understanding of media bias and representation. A slight majority, 66%, acknowledge some level of ideological slant in local publications. Yet, this does not seem to undermine the media's perceived inclusivity, as 64% believe their local outlets reflect their community's diversity. This is significant, as it highlights the crucial role of local media in fostering a sense of community cohesion and representation. Encouragingly, the perceived integrity of local news appears to be on solid ground, with 65% feeling that its trustworthiness has either improved or remained consistent over the past five years. This could be attributed to local media's closer ties to the communities they serve, potentially making them more responsive and accountable to their audiences. Lastly, over half of the respondents (55%) feel that local media provides a sufficiently diverse array of perspectives and opinions. In a polarized era, the ability of local news to offer a variety of viewpoints is more important than ever, suggesting that while there is always room for improvement, local media is on the right track. In conclusion, local media in America occupies a unique and vital position. As the national media landscape becomes more partisan, local news offers a more trusted, inclusive, and community-focused alternative. While challenges remain, the findings from PR Fire's survey offer a hopeful outlook for the future of local journalism in America.

It's an honor to contribute some year-end advice for the LION: Local Independent Online News Publishers community. I loved working with this organization and their publishers in 2023. Here's my tip: 🕰️ Set aside one to two hours each week to look outside your publication, seek new resources, and learn about the business of media. This may seem like a luxury in the midst of multiple deadlines, but there are tangible benefits to blocking this time. 🗞️Local news, by nature, is restricted in scope. By dedicating this time to looking elsewhere, you seek external resources –– such as LION’s online courses, new grant and partnership opportunities, best practice guides, or peer publications outside your region. 🔭 Most importantly, this will enable you to zoom out and plan for your publication’s long-term future. 🙌And yes, I practice what I preach. In fact, these reading and research sessions are one of the best parts of my week.

Syndicating a newswire to 3000+ news outlets, we're often asked what types of content drive the most PR, or even why local news outlets would consider taking more evergreen style features/data journalism. There's a lot to discuss in this Northwestern University Medill School study on news consumption habits - like the fact that 54% of respondents "believe local news outlets are doing “somewhat well” financially..." But of all the findings, there was one that stuck out for me that I haven't seen reported on to date: "The survey found that the main reason people said they consume local news and information is to meet the needs of everyday life. Specifically, 60% of respondents consume news because it “helps me save and manage money,” while 52% consume news because it “helps me stay healthy.” The "Your money/Your Life" secret is not new, but this is a telling tale that there is a lot of opportunity to drive value for readers, value for news outlets, and value for your organization, in creating unique features made available for syndication by local outlets. I recommend this post by Alexandra Smith on "total journalism reach" -- The 19th's new readership metric. It's full of insights and data wisdom. One takeaway: prioritize consistency across platforms without being overly rigid. For example, #Instagram views get counted because their posts basically republish an abridged version of the story -- an increasingly common publishing strategy -- not just because the machine needs more #data. Above all, this model is attentive to the question of *why* we measure #readership. I've always felt that digital interactions are metaphorical -- as summed up in that now quaint adage: "tweets, not endorsements." What does readership *represent*? Answering that question will help you collect quality, consistent data on #news consumption. And that will bring us closer to the readers we serve. https://lnkd.in/gxn4wmYy

A long overdue update on the status and future of Psychedelic State(s) of America. "I’ve typed up a few dozen versions of a mission statement so far - none of which have struck the right tone yet for me to feel comfortable stapling it on the proverbial forehead of this new venture of mine. I may eventually get around to posting a thoroughly-refined manifesto of sorts on here, but for now I’ll just say this: I believe that the state of psychedelic journalism is ripe for disruption - and that psychedelic-intrigued readers and viewers alike are being deprived of people-first, policy-informed journalism at the expense of 'evergreen content' and five-figure ad buys by the half dozen." Check out the link below for the full update - and subscribe to Psychedelic State(s) of America today to support people-first, policy-focused psychedelic journalism.
