The proliferation of Food is Medicine interventions and their increasing use within health care has been mostly ahead of the research, driven in large part by nonprofits and advocates who have developed creative programs to meet the nutrition-related needs of people living with chronic illness. To inform the next decade of Food is Medicine research, the recommendations in this Action Plan: • Offer concrete guidance on how to embed equity throughout the Food is Medicine research continuum; • Identify key considerations to ensure that research designs are robust and appropriate for yielding the most valuable and actionable information; • Identify the most urgent questions that have yet to be explored; and • Describe how funders and other stakeholders can support the most valuable research in the field. Did you know that over half of the world's population—4.5 billion people—are not fully covered by essential health services? At TMOS, we have dedicated some of our research to bridging this gap and creating tangible solutions for the health industry, all with the aim of promoting health equity. One shining example is the Ketowhistle—a groundbreaking innovation that offers a less invasive, durable, and cost-effective method for measuring glucose levels. Developed by the brilliant minds of Shiyu Wei (PhD), Dr. Buddini Karawdeniya, and Prof Lan Fu at The Australian National University, the Ketowhistle began as a Capstone project under the expert guidance of Prof Antonio Tricoli and Dr. Krishnan Murugappan. This product exemplifies the power of interdisciplinary collaboration, a cornerstone of the Our Health in Our Hands (OHIOH) project. This includes time for study planning and training to ensure that researchers fully listen to community and practitioner voices and effectively integrate equity principles into the research design framework. ✅ Congress should provide the National Institutes of Health (NIH) with significant funding dedicated to Food is Medicine research. The NIH should also leverage its own resources to continue its path-breaking work in emphasizing and expanding Food is Medicine research, including by establishing Food is Medicine Centers of Excellence. ✅ Health care payers should partner with government agencies and one another to enable more cross-disciplinary Food is Medicine research that is ambitious and builds in equity-centered evaluation components from the outset, especially for high-impact opportunities like state Medicaid waiver programs.
