Wow! What an honor to return to work after some much needed time away to see that a piece that Lucy Brainard and I penned, with the support of Lina Eroh and Brittany Sullivan, made it to the top 10 most read list of SSIR articles in 2023. When we initially concepted this piece, we thought about two principles we care deeply about: 1) trust-based philanthropic practices and 2) a commitment to supporting grantees in achieving their goals of greater impact. Our approach is shaped by the belief that Atul Gawande writes about -- the concept that everyone has blind spots and can benefit from a coach or a guide -- someone who can help navigate tough challenges and get out of the dreaded "plateau" in their work. In our SSIR article, we explain why trust-based philanthropy and strategic capacity building are compatible, and we share our experiences helping organizations become more cost-effective, sustainable, and scalable. We write, "Funders should play a more strategic and hands-on role that involves engaging in transparent conversations with grantees, acknowledging valuable perspectives on both sides, and co-creating plans to address agreed-on challenges.”

As I reflect on the remarkable journey of the Twin Cities GroundBreak Coalition, which has successfully mobilized a groundbreaking $1 billion to address racial equity, I’m struck by the sheer potential of collective impact and strategic vision. This isn't just a win for the Twin Cities; it's a clarion call to communities everywhere that change is possible. The coalition’s approach, marrying ambitious financial targets with cross-sector collaboration and deep community engagement, offers a template for systemic transformation. In Milwaukee, where the echoes of segregation still influence economic disparities, especially within the African-American community, there's much we can learn and apply from GroundBreak’s model: Set Bold, Measurable Goals: GroundBreak’s aim to raise $5.3 billion over a decade for racial equity initiatives demonstrates the power of setting bold targets. Foster Broad Coalitions: The coalition’s strength lies in its more than 40 corporate, civic, and philanthropic partners. Milwaukee could similarly benefit from uniting diverse stakeholders around a common cause. Commit to Community Engagement: Solutions are most effective when they emerge from the community's heart. GroundBreak’s active community engagement ensures their strategies are grounded in real needs and aspirations. Innovate Financial Tools: The coalition’s financial tools, like down payment assistance and start-up loans, can be a template for creating equitable growth in Milwaukee. Prioritize Systemic Change: Beyond short-term projects, GroundBreak’s focus on long-term systemic change is something we need to mirror to address the structural roots of economic disparities. The time for change is now. Let’s take inspiration from our neighbors and work towards a future where economic prosperity is accessible to all in Milwaukee. Q: What are one of the first steps when seeking to diversify your Board of Trustees? A: A skills audit.... In order to identify what skills you need on the board you need to understand what skills you already have. At Smallwood Trust Board meeting recently Anj Handa did this in a really simple and brilliant way - she asked us to pair up with another board member where we had to tell them what skills we appreciated in them... this left us with a list of skills we currently had in the group (it was strange how we found complementing each other and receiving those complement so hard!!!!) Then later we had a conversation of what skills were needed to make our board most effective given the work/ambitions of the foundation. So some of the skills we value in each other are : ·      Understanding of systems change and strategy ·      Stepping back from the detail ·      Finance ·      Positive disagreement ·      Different perspectives ·      Putting personal interests and emotion aside in decision making ·  Stewardship and good governance ·      Attention to facts ·      etc. And what skills would make us even more effective: Personal and professional Attributes and Style ·      Diverse life experiences ·      Strong commitment to the cause ·      Balance of communication and thinking styles ·      Integrity ·      Alignment with the Nolan principles – the seven principles of public life ·      Balance of professional attributes ·      Business/corporate ·      Commissioners ·      Not just the from Third Sector ·      Collegiate   Life experiences ·      Volunteering for charities ·      Lived experience of the issues that Smallwood Trust Seeks to address, such as expertise of poverty, abuse, homelessness, domestic abuse commerce single parent, single mental health, addiction, chronic health/disability common money management plus empathy and application to the wider issues and delivery of Smallwood Trust mission ·      Impact of change ·      Activism / advocacy ·      Radical friends ·      Connection to local resources/community sector    Other Skills ·      Communications ·      Systems change  ·      Conflict management ·      Being able to communicate ·      Listening skills ·     etc. This sets a great foundation to build on as we think about the evolution of our Board in the coming year. #boarddiversity #inclusionmatters #shiftthepower #trustees
