Numbers don't lie, and Abercrombie's sales are telling a clear story: the brand is back in play as a major retailer. Total company sales came out just over $1 billion for the first quarter, beating already lofty estimates and representing a 22% increase from last year. Investors are cheering the strong quarter with the stock near an all-time high (fun fact, it’s actually outperforming market darling NVIDIA in the past year…by a huge margin) After a period of decline, the Abercrombie brand is a fascinating comeback story. Its stores are a far cry from the dimly-lit stores that made skin-tight t-shirts and low-rise jeans aimed at the high school crowd. In the last five years the brand has been on a reinvention journey that overhauled its marketing, products and c-suite. It spent five years studying the lifestyles of twenty-somethings helping them to redesign and pivot its strategy. Nowadays you’re more likely to find a blazer in the store than you are t-shirt with the company’s logo splayed on the front. The company now relies mostly on its digital business, CEO Fran Horowtizs told CNBC today, although its locations are still an important piece of the puzzle. A number of tailwinds have been working in the retailer's favor – from the ‘denim upswing’ (as Morgan Stanley’s Matt Boss puts it), to the rise of influencers and even the company’s new wedding shop. This grown up version of Abercrombie & Fitch is definitely a key stock to watch. Abercrombie Stock Soars First Time Since 90s… Rad. Abercrombie Stock Out of all the mall megabrands of the 90s, most wouldn’t have guessed this one to be a Wall Street banger. It is more than 1990s nostalgia fueling its success… Abercrombie Stock Booms 7X in Value Over Two Years During the 90s and early 2000s, Abercrombie was one of the most popular apparel stores for teens and twenty-somethings. However as the new millennium wore on, the company’s outlook was not good… Between controversies surrounding its former CEO and many store closures, A&F appeared to be on the edge of extinction. THEN, ABERCROMBIE STOCK HAD STELLAR GROWTH IN 2022 AND 2023 SEEMINGLY OUT OF NOWHERE. Shares of A&F went from $25 a share in 2023 to $181 a share present day. In 2023, their sales were up 16% and numbers are already up 10% for 2024. Which all is to say, it is good to see a company learn from its mistakes and bounce back to its former glory. Still, let’s leave the A&F bucket hats in the early 2000s where they belong…
