Today marks World Malaria Day, a global call to action against this devastating disease. Despite progress, malaria still affects millions of people globally. Past health reports revealed Malaria as one of the main causes of child morbidity in Sudan. Around 75 per cent of all child deaths are registered due to preventable diseases, such as diarrhea, Malaria, and pneumonia. This year, there is expected to be an exponential increase in fatalities due to 70-80 per cent of the hospitals in conflict-affected areas no longer being functional. Moreover, 65 per cent of the population lacks access to healthcare. 𝗕𝘂𝘁 𝗮 𝘀𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝗺𝗼𝘀𝗾𝘂𝗶𝘁𝗼 𝗻𝗲𝘁 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝘀𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗹𝗶𝘃𝗲𝘀! We are desperate to provide our communities with as many mosquito nets as possible. Could you donate just £18.00 today to give a family two mosquito nets to save children’s lives? Together, we can play our part in eradicating this deadly disease from Darfur. Wild poliovirus once paralyzed 7,000 children a week. In 2023, that number was only 12 children (all in a remote area between Pakistan and Afghanistan) and it's been 11 weeks since the last case of wild polio was reported. This progress is possible because of brilliant innovators who discovered breakthroughs and frontline heroes who made sure that solutions reached children, even in the most remote parts of the world. And so much of that was possible because of philanthropy: Rotary International, the Gates foundation, and other organizations dedicated to a future where polio is a thing of the past. (adapted from the Gates Foundation). With polio, a 99.999% reduction is great BUT NOT GOOD ENOUGH... The scourge of polio is not officially over until the world has three years of ZERO reported cases. Then, it is truly a Polio Free world. #Rotary #trfrotary #polio

We have come such a long way since 1985, when Rotary International first launched its polio eradication efforts. Having contributed over $2 billion and immunized more than 2.5 billion #children in 122 countries over the last four decades, Rotary and its GPEI partners aim to end polio forever. Today, we are closer to this goal than ever before, as polio remains endemic in only two countries, Afghanistan and Pakistan. However, the statistics are truly alarming: if we were to stop our #polio eradication efforts today, then in just a decade, over 200,000 children could fall victim to polio on a yearly basis. Therefore, we must do everything we can to prevent the resurgence of this disease that we've come so close to defeating. The need for collective action to eventually reach a polio-free world is vital, and Rotary is firm in its determination to make that vision a reality. #Donate through rotary.org to #EndPolioNow #PolioAwareness #7AreasofFocus #ServiceAboveSelf #LebaneseDiaspora #Lebanon #Rotary #RotaryInternational #RotaryClubofLebanonInternational #District2452

🌟 Is 'effective altruism' the way forward? 🌟 Effective altruism is the idea that grantmakers/philanthropists should work together to identify the 'best' solutions to the world's most pressing problems - mostly based on the number of people reached (often lives saved) per dollar. Websites like GiveWell research and rank nonprofits for their effectiveness - with the top scoring organisations usually those who reach huge numbers of people with lifesaving interventions, for example malaria prevention programmes. While these causes are obviously important, does this approach ignore more complex, expensive and messy problems, or smaller organisations working to have a longer term, deeper impact for a smaller number of people?

Just announced at #RLMForum: a coalition of partners renewed and strengthened their joint support for community health workers, which includes a commitment by the Global Fund of up to US$900 million for the next 3 years—74% of which will be invested in African countries. As a founding member of Africa Frontline First, we joined the following partners in this historic commitment, made on the sidelines of #COP28’s first-ever Health Day in the United Arab Emirates: The Global Fund, Africa CDC, Africa Frontline First, the Children's Investment Fund Foundation (CIFF), The ELMA Philanthropies, the Johnson & Johnson Foundation, Skoll Foundation, Mastercard Foundation, The Rockefeller Foundation, the U.S. President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), the U.S. President’s Malaria Initiative (PMI), USAID, and UNICEF. Community health workers, with the salaries, supplies, skills, and supervision they need to achieve their full potential, are essential to resilient health systems that can adapt to disease and climate threats, and achieve universal health coverage. Today’s announcement moves us closer to a world where no one is left behind. https://lnkd.in/e9pbcVcM

*Mission possible: End Malaria* In these uneasy times, with news channels filled with stories of conflict, hatred and war, it is easy to feel apathy and a sense of helplessness, also on fronts where we can - and have been - making steady progress. Each birthday, I draw attention to one issue - a new one every year - that goes under the radar, but where each of us, in the aggregate, can make a big difference. This year I have decided to highlight and support the fight against #malaria and other mosquito-borne diseases. For many years (at least the last two decades), things have been looking brighter. In 2000 #malariaprevention was designated as a critical target of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). By the target year in 2015, WHO concluded malaria incidence had fallen by 37% globally and death rates by 60%. The same year, scientists even suggested mosquitos could be genetically modified to eradicate the disease carte blanche. Now, however, this cause of death is on the rise. The main reason: increasingly adaptive and resistant species of malaria-carrying mosquitoes. Malaria and other mosquito-borne viruses are one of the main causes of premature deaths globally, causing about 620,000 deaths each year. More worryingly, one particular malaria-carrying species of mosquito, Anopheles stephensi, is developing resistance to common preventive measures, such as insecticides. Moreover, the mosquitos are becoming better adapted to survive the dry season – and even thrive in areas formerly believed to be safe from malaria, such as coastal cities and the continental interior. This means a large new population (researchers have estimated an additional 126 million people) is becoming susceptible to malaria, especially vulnerable children under the age of 5 in the poorer regions of sub-Saharan Africa, threatening to undermine all progress indicators on malaria prevention. This dramatic evolution is seriously undermining the UN #sustainabledevelopmentgoals #3, target 3.3.: "By 2030, end the epidemics of AIDS, tuberculosis, malaria and neglected tropical diseases and combat hepatitis, water-borne diseases and other communicable diseases". This is why I believe the work of The Against Malaria Foundation is more important than ever. Through collaborating with each country’s national malaria program and other partner organizations to distribute protective nets in mass distribution campaigns, they have provided more than 200 million nets to millions of households in more than 8 malaria-endemic countries in Africa. These nets have likely prevented more than 150,000 deaths by malaria and other communicable diseases. I challenge you to join me in supporting their important mission: To end death by malaria!! And I suggest you do it annually, through either Giving What We Can: https://lnkd.in/dzKzJCgi or the Norwegian charity Gi Effektivt: https://lnkd.in/dNibdZC8
