Today marked the Opening Ceremony of Climate Week NYC - one of the largest annual climate events of its kind, bringing together some 400 events and activities across the City of New York – in person, hybrid and online. It was a fantastic event hosted by the Climate Group, an international non-profit whose purpose is to drive climate action, with this year's key theme being: "We Can. We Will." Action and Relentless Determination were emphasized across the various sessions and guest speakers due to the fact that we're currently on track for a 2.5-3.0°C rise in global temperatures versus the targeted 1.5°C. Thus, the urgency and why the most important decade of climate action is upon us, all of us, including heads of state, government officials, CEOs, civil society leaders, and the public. One of the guest speakers, Razan Al Mubarak (President of the International Union for Conservation of Nature and UN Climate Change High-Level Champion), really stood out to me with her statements on how ironic it is that "we are losing nature in a time when we need nature the most", that "climate change is a consequence of the mismanagement of nature", and how critical it is that we invest in nature-based solutions due to its carbon absorptive / sequestration capacity.
