Throughout my military career, I was conditioned to always say "yes" when asked to take on more responsibility, do additional tasks, etc. Rarely did I stop to think whether the tasks I was being asked to do were more important and have a greater impact on the mission than what I was currently doing. While we strive to do our very best and meet the expectations of those above us, embracing the reality that "doing more with less (time)" isn't the best approach. Internalize the value you bring and focus on self-improvement, self-worth, and driving positive change for your organization!

In February, I spoke at Southeastern Community College’s professional development day. We discussed the need for employees to use emotional intelligence to serve those around them. At the end of the session, I asked people to make a 30-day commitment to practice one aspect of emotional maturity. Over 100 people committed that day. After 30 days of tracking progress, the team’s average emotional intelligence self-rating doubled from start to finish. Great things came from these 30 days of focus: ➡  More employees assumed positive intent about other's actions, changing the nature of conversations. ➡  More employees were listening to understand their coworkers, not just to respond. ➡  More employees were slowing down to ensure they weren’t running over people in the name of getting things done. Kudos to the team at SCC for their dedication to building a more emotionally mature culture! 

So many opportunities ahead in 2024...and so much talent available in the market to continue to help Tenney Group grow. For all you leaders of teams and builders of businesses, what do you value more than talent and why (when hiring)?

This week I got to be a part of one of our INSURICA Rockstar's presentations. Colton Zajac really made me think. Winning The Talent War addressed 4 big HR issues. Culture, Career Development, Compensation and Benefits. Of course Benefits should be the one I would think is the most important since that is my career, right? But when I thought about it personally, that is not where I landed. 💵 I don't want to work for free....no one does, so Compensation should be my number one right? But that also has not completely shaped my past decisions. Well then it should be Career Development. We all want to move up and be recognized for our good work. However in looking back on my career path, I don't see that was my deciding factor. Looks like it is Culture for me. I spend most of my weekdays working and having that positive environment, where I truly feel valued, not just told I'm valued is so important to me. 💡 I was however reminded during the amazing discussion, what we desire even within culture changes all the time. One year it can be team and getting together and the next year it can be flexibility and being able to work remotely. Needs/Desires/Wants are a revolving door. It's important to stay in touch with your employees, your most valuable assets, to know what is important to them. Know what they value and know when that changes. Most importantly change with them.
