As a game developer, reading about the closures of Arkane Austin and Tango Gameworks is disheartening. Despite creating successful games like "Hi-Fi Rush," these studios were shut down, underscoring a harsh reality in our industry: even profitability and critical acclaim don't guarantee stability. This trend of prioritizing high-impact titles over steady, quality work is unsettling. It's a reminder of the volatile nature of our field and the need for a more sustainable approach to valuing and preserving creative talent. https://lnkd.in/eSQjkiXs

What is an "indie" game? Dredge was published by Team17 (£137.4M gross revenue) Cocoon was published by Annapurna Interactive (Had the ability to resolve over $200M in debts, owned by a billionaire's family member) etc These games are absolutely deserving of recognition and awards, but there's an argument that an "indie" game should refer to a studio with independence from big publishers. Are we ignoring truly independent developers by labelling these titles as indie? I'd love to see a mid-point here. Maybe an extra category to commemorate these absolute bangers, developed in situations incomparable to AAAs, but still not fully independent from external support. I'd love to hear from anyone who's worked on games like these. Is there a cut-off point? Defining the lines between indie, AA, and AAA seems like an impossible task. #indiegames #gameawards #gamedev

#IndieCupGermany23 is now over 💫 Thanks to our participants, jurors and sponsors for joining us this year. It was fun! Out of 76 submissions, 20 games got nominated, and 4 received the awards. We’re already excited to see where all of them go next. But first, a few closing words. We'll begin with congratulation — once again — to the teams that won awards yesterday: Paintbucket Games, Chanko Studios, neoludic games UG and Ajjir. Paintbucket Games in particular managed to take home two Official Selection awards at once, which hasn’t happened in a while. Good job! Each Official Selection winner gets a free 1-year Houdini license by our sponsors at Houdini by SideFX Software, and Ajjir will get a Bronze playtesting package by G.Round. All nominated games also get written jury feedback — available to participants this Friday (you’ll get an email). Speaking of the Official Selection vote, we couldn’t be more grateful to our amazing jury panel. You folks always have the hardest job — actually making up your mind on which game is the best. Thanks for agreeing to do this! Can’t wait to have you back ❤️ We were also lucky to get awesome festival sponsors. Thanks to our partners at G.Round, a bunch of games not nominated in other categories were reviewed by players in the public vote. Our thanks also go to the great people at Houdini, who continue supporting independent developers with awesome prizes at Indie Cup. We had so many interesting titles in second round of the Official Selection vote at #IndieCupGermany23, and we’re very excited to talk more about them in the future. Meanwhile, you can give yourself a treat and explore all of them on our website. Sadly, a lot of interesting games didn't get the spots in the Nominees and Winners selections. If you want to treat yourself to the full breadth of upcoming German indies, get a Showcase Pass for this season. It's free for journalists and content creators, too.You can learn more on our website. Finally, developers is why Indie Cup exists. We were honored to host so many great titles at #IndieCupGermany23, and we can’t wait to see where all of you go next. As always, all festival participants will be invited to join Indie Cup’s next Steam event, scheduled for 2024. What’s next? We launch the #UkrainianGamesFestival event on Steam this Friday, which will run 18 to 24 August. Then, on 29 August, we open submissions for #IndieCupCanada23. If you make games in Canada, get ready to send us an application. And Germany — we’ll see you next year!

The points in this article are how every indie game studio should be run! Don't fret. The current "hellscape" will become the future "heavenly" norm and the industry will be better for it. We promise. It's actually our core vision here at Camlann. And I'm glad to see indie voices are starting to be heard. Summed up: 1. Be lean 2. Diversify 3. Know who your audience is 4. Don't be afraid to think outside the box when it comes to income streams and sustainability https://lnkd.in/emuhZT4y #indiegames #pcgames #indiegamedev #gamingindustry

One announcement is good, but several are better? We think so! Therefore, we are sharing with you information about where you can find out more about new games today. TinyBuild, the publisher behind popular indie games such as Graveyard Keeper, Potion Craft, Streets of Rogue and Punch Club, will be introducing several of its new games to gamers as part of the tinyBuild Connect presentation. This will be a 20-minute show filled with exclusive trailers, announcements and new details - nothing extra, just games. “Expect lots of new game trailers, world premieres and good vibes! Let's start with Heradon Studios vision. 👾Designing/developing games for us required to be working multidisciplinary. That's why the best explanation for Heradon Studios is "designs/develops long-term games by working multidisciplinary." 🫱🏼🫲🏻We believe team work and never stop learning "together" are significant. 🕵🏼We are using game industry academic research techniques in our games. ⛰️We believe that our creativity and player profile lead us to create the best player experiences. 🌟Mistakes are not bad, every one of them is an experience. 👑We think designing/developing games have to be "Fun" as playing games. We're excited that we design/develop for you!
