Tuesday Tidbit: As we leave one year behind and embark upon a new one, you often hear of people setting new goals or benchmarks that they strive to achieve in the coming year. In years past, I have attempted the tried and true with varying success: Lose weight / Tone muscle Go to the gym more often Spend more time with family and friends Travel to bucket list countries Save more for retirement This year, I am simplifying to two words: BE INTENTIONAL. I aspire to be more intentional with my words, actions, time, money, etc. While vague, this goal allows me to take a step back and be thoughtful and proceed with intent about the tasks and challenges that I will face this year. Our CEO Mark Guymer was interviewed this week by Asian Voice News for this powerful article by journalist Anusha Singh, which raises awareness of #Cancer among the #Asian community and highlights the vital need for more open conversations about cancer. Mark talks about the key challenges or barriers faced by men when it comes to #cancerawareness and seeking support. "Men with cancer face #genderdiscrimination, as well as societal and cultural taboos. Side effects of cancer in particular can be very distressing for men, resulting in #social #stigmatisation, which can be difficult to handle. It can result in feelings of #shame, hopelessness and #isolation. Consequently, they are reluctant to ask for help and even get treatment. It helps distinguish between normal and abnormal levels. The cutoff can vary by gender, age, and race... ⏱️ Delta Change (Δ Change): The change in hs-cTn levels over a short period (like 1-3 hours) is crucial for diagnosing acute heart injuries. Exploring Neurodegenerative Disease Research: Insights from #ADPD2024 AD/PD - Advances in Science & Therapy Last week the AD/PD 2024 Conference was held in Lisbon, Portugal. One of the biggest conferences in the diary brining together the neurodegenerative disease research community to discuss the latest advancements and collaborative efforts in understanding and treating Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases. Ian F Harrison from University College London presented his work on the glymphatic system, emphasising its role in the propagation and clearance of pathogenic proteins such as alpha-synuclein and tau. This research is critical for understanding the pathophysiology of neurodegenerative diseases and for identifying potential therapeutic targets. Ariana Gatt from University College London shares her highlights and her own work on the significance of RNA-binding proteins, particularly in the context of frontotemporal dementia, and discussed her research on hnRNP proteins. This line of investigation sheds light on the molecular underpinnings of neurodegeneration and opens new avenues for targeted therapies. The conference also underscored the progress in developing disease-modifying treatments for Alzheimer's disease. Insights from Jess Tobin of Alzheimer's Research UK into phase 3 clinical trials and regulatory milestones highlight a new era of therapeutic possibilities that could profoundly impact patient outcomes. The Role of Biomarkers in Advancing Diagnosis and Treatment was a focal point of the conference!
