The NYC subway is perhaps the best subway system in North America. But I am always frustrated when I enter a subway station that has numerous digital advertisement screens - but no easily accessible train departure information. Here’s my proposal. Displaying train arrival info alongside digital advertisements doesn’t just give value to riders - it also incentivizes them to spend more time looking at the advertisement itself. Reducing the size of an advertisement by around 20% with relevant train info could have a huge return on investment (or “ROI” as LinkedIn people call it) for advertisers, riders, and the Metropolitan Transportation Authority alike. Are you late to work? For the subway to get from point A to B it takes longer in rush hour since there are a lot of people getting on and off at each station. For the individual traveller getting onto the subway fast is nice since there can be an opportunity to grab a seat instead of standing but as a collective getting onto the subway is an optimization problem. The shorter time a subway spends at a subway station the faster everybody on the subway reaches their destination. How can you do it? In and then out. Everybody on the station gets onto the subway and then those who want to get off twist themself out through the crowd. Everybody on the same time more or less. A couple goes into the train to find a seat, a few go out and a few go in until those getting off and those getting on are all on the subway and those getting off have reached the platform. Out and then in. Those on the platform leave room for all of those getting off and then those on the platform enter the train. Which alternative will get you to work in time? When planning do you optimize for an individual task or the whole process? #optimization #development

SEOUL, Sept. 7 (Korea Bizwire) — The Seoul Metropolitan Government on Wednesday introduced a tagless fare payment system at 12 subway stations on the Ui-Sinseol Light Rail Transit (excluding Bomun Station) in collaboration with transportation card issuer Tmoney Co. This marks the world’s first introduction of a tagless system in a subway network. The term ‘tagless’ refers to a system that enables passengers to pass through subway ticket gates without the need to tag transportation cards. An antenna device positioned above the ticket gate receives passenger information via Bluetooth and automatically processes payments. To pass through the tagless gate, passengers must first install the Mobile T-Money application and then activate the tagless system and Bluetooth.

Paris officially became the first European city to ban e-scooters, though other cities have placed greater restrictions on the use of e-scooters within city limits to curb usage. Per ST data, downloads and MAUs of apps in the e-scooter cohort were down a collective average of 31% and 13% YoY, in Aug’23, respectively, as increased restrictions, record-high heat, and alternative transportation methods weighed on growth. E-scooter apps typically rely on seasonal boosts to drive increased adoption and usage but this may be under threat with the growing number of restrictions put in place: Between May’23-Aug’23, download totals and MAUs for the e-scooter cohort increased a collective average of 79% and 22%, respectively, compared to the prior four month period (Jan’23-Apr’23)

Customers who use Network One - the travel ticket covering any bus, Metro and Shields Ferry journey – can now buy any combination of zones on a Pop smart card for the first time, with fewer zones to make it simpler for people to find the right price for their journey. The new Network One zonal structure, which launches on 19 May, will see a reduction in zones from five to four. Most changes occur towards the south east of the Tyne and Wear region. All zone Network One tickets have already been available to buy on Pop card since June 2021, making it easier for people to travel around the region using buses, Shields Ferry and the Tyne and Wear Metro. From 19 May, this offering will be extended, and a range of different zone variations will be available on a Pop card.
