The number of times I have heard local media outlet managers – and international development teams – say “we know what people really watch/listen to/click…” is astounding. Credible audience research is critical to 1) learning what target audiences actually do; and 2) crafting content that meets audiences where they are, with information they want to consume. Thoughtful piece from Nieman Journalism Lab about learning audience behaviors raises an excellent reality: People lie. Professional audience research data – viewer ratings for television, audience retention for social media videos, average engagement time for websites and apps – should instruct and shape creative and newsroom content choices. “Smart people sitting around a table” making decisions is better when becoming “Smart people with credible audience data” making informed decisions. #internationaldevelopment #mediadevelopment #medialiteracy #factchecking #disinformation

Bringing some subtext to the fore (about the tragic situation which dominates the #mediasphere), addressing important tenants of #MediaLiteracy in what may mark a significant turn in the decades-long history of #SocialMedia. Sounds to me like Rushkoff (2023y: 28-298) is having a reflexive moment which addresses the inherent elitism in Old (Frankfurt) School approaches to media literacy with his delight for the ongoing moment in #ParticipatoryDemocracy, #CollectiveIntelligence, and #PublicEngagement. Since the published author mentioned something about maintaining his LinkedIn account (at least for advertising), it might be worth thinking about this moment for Microsoft’s most prominent social media property. Here in Canada, at least, it has become a space for reappropriating media since the kerfuffle over Bill C-18 (covered masterfully by Michael Geist and CANADALAND). Since Meta is blocking links to news from any Facebook or Instagram account used in this “home on Native land”, LI becomes an outlet for diverse professionals who also discover that exchanges here tend to be more civil, through a form of “organic moderation”. As much as we hate (on) the company behind it and complain about its #DarkPatterns, it’s a fascinating space. And some of it does have to do with existing #SocialNetworks and even #SocialNetworkAnalysis (for instance, #Clustering and #BetweennessCentrality, both of which run through my thoughts about the #SocialButterflyEffect). Recently, journalist Marie-Julie Gagnon wondered out loud about the motivations people had for increasing their activities on LinkedIn. To me, at least, a lot of it has to do with what I found on SixDegrees.com when Stéphane Ethier invited me there in the late 1990s. After many of us had been focused on online conversations and “content” for a few years (off the Web), we found some spots on the Web to carry activities related to our social networks. It was then a shift to the Web from other online activities. Simply put, from bulletin boards, newsgroups, mailing-lists, group chats, and status/profile/finger (!) to forums and messaging (clunky, both). As a grad student doing fieldwork in West Africa, I was becoming increasingly attuned to the power of network structures, which often bypass some hierarchical structures. Of course, Eurocentric approaches to networking tend towards the “instrumental” side… which isn’t necessarily that foreign to the ways people I met in the field would leverage their networks. However, in West Africa, there are complementary structures which bring forth the notion of interdependence. #Senankuya (what anthropologists once called “Joking Relationships”) is a powerful form of networking between social groups.
