Ford delays start of EV production at Oakville plant until 2027 and delay will mean layoffs. Yikes! What is going on? When I was a kid my mom would take me to the local grocery store, IGA (for those of you in Ontario). Milk prices were always plastered on the window enticing people to come in. The milk was sold at a loss, a 'loss leader'. If people only bought the milk, the store would go broke, but they were correctly betting that once in the store, folks would buy other staples and hopefully do their weeks' worth of grocery shopping, which they did, so it all worked out. My take is that the car companies are being forced/mandated to sell EVs but the EVs are their 'loss leader in order to keep selling their money making internal combustion engine vehicles. Boston Consulting Group recently estimated that automakers lose around $6,000 on each EV they effectively sell for $50,000. That price even accounts for tax credits and other incentives the customer might be eligible for! The simple answer rests on volume production but consumer demand is simply not there. The car companies are being mandated to make products that there is no demand for. No wonder the car companies are pushing back and delaying launches. It's like in the example above, telling the grocers to keep selling milk at a loss and by 2035 they will only be able to sell milk and nothing else! How is that supposed to work? If governments really want to help the environment, they should be pushing for us all to drive hybrids. No plug in infrastructure issues, no range anxiety, much better gas mileage, a hybrid vehicle is an EV when it can be and an internal combustion vehicle when it needs to be. Then those Ford workers could be making hybrids instead of getting laid off because of false expectations on EV production and demand.
