Alpine skiing - Winter Olympic Games and Qualifications
As the 2026 Winter Olympics approach, athletes from smaller primary federations are entering the arena in pursuit of securing their participation slots. Drawing lessons from past endeavors, particularly the recent Olympic Games, where efforts were made to increase the involvement of more minor federations, “athletes who supported specific competitors from small Federations”, in specific events achieved, “under unforeseen circumstances, participation thresholds”.
However, this approach resulted in significant challenges for the close-knit FIS community. Therefore, decision-makers should thoroughly reevaluate the prospect of expanding qualifications criteria for small federations, focusing primarily on technical events.
Building upon the timeless essence of the Olympic Games, wherein participation holds greater value than mere victory, it is imperative to contemplate granting participation opportunities to additional federations. This can be achieved through a more lenient set of criteria, thus enabling the Olympics, occurring quadrennially, to serve as the ultimate aspiration for certain federations and their athletes.
The FIS boasts experts and knowledgeable individuals who possess a comprehensive understanding and the ability to determine all pertinent parameters. However, they must seriously consider the relaxation of participation thresholds for technical events, and exclusively technical events, to curtail the instances of severe accidents.
This involves setting attainable standards that amateur athletes can strive for, such as adjusting the FIS points threshold to 280 in any of the technical events, and mandating participation in a minimum of 8 races within the specific discipline for qualification, yielding results devoid of DNF (Did Not Finish) or DSQ (Disqualification) for each of the two years preceding the Olympic Games.
By adopting this approach, individuals with limited racing experience and skill levels can partake without resorting to “unacceptable or hazardous measures”. This dual strategy ensures the preservation of the Olympic Games' institution and extends participation to numerous smaller federations.
Otherwise, the genuine risk of an exclusive presence of professional athletes and prominent federations, a phenomenon witnessed in recent years during skiing's World Cup and World Championships, becomes evident.
