"What does success look like?" In the middle of launching a campaign for a brand-new company with no established social media presence, limited brand assets and nothing fully established, the challenge is undeniable. How do you attract candidates to an event when they might not have heard about the company yet? Fast forward to today, and not only did we meet our goal, but we passed it! Out of the 36 interviews conducted, an incredible 26 candidates met our criteria, providing us with 2 or 3 strong contenders for each role we're looking to fill. This outcome was achieved on a remarkably low budget – staying under £600 for the entire campaign. Success in this instance, isn't just about numbers; it is about overcoming challenges, using limited resources, and building a foundation for the future. As a team, we made it happen, and it's exciting to be part of the journey ahead for Llanw!

Even before my involvement with Bring Back the Trades, Inc, I often would be asked by friends and associates: “Would you talk to my son?”. The typical conversation would go something like this: “He’s finishing high school and he’s not a good student, I don’t see him thriving in college so maybe he should consider a trade”. While I’m always thrilled to speak with and mentor young men and women who are pondering career choices and I'm honored that their parents hold me in such high regard, one of the things I make a point to tell the parents is “I’m willing to bet that it’s not that your son/daughter isn’t a good student but rather they have little interest in what they are being taught.” The simple fact is that we cannot teach someone something they have no interest in. We can force kids to memorize things for the purpose of standardized testing but unless you have a genuine interest in what they just “studied”, they probably didn’t learn anything. I’ve watched many of my own friends that were far from scholars, go on to great careers which started in the trades. I recall a close friend of mine who started out as an auto body mechanic and later went on to work in the automotive paint industry give an in-depth technical presentation about “isocyanate versus non-isocyanate products”. I teased him mercilessly about his grades in high school and how his teachers would be in shock to hear him presenting like a chemical engineer. The fact is that we only truly learn when something interests us. Part of the real problem we face in recruiting young adults for the skilled trades is perception. For the last 40 years that I can recall, educators have pushed “college for all” and unfortunately, vilified the trades as a place for stupid or lazy kids. “You’re taking the easy way out. You just need someone to kick your ass”. That’s what the dean of engineering at a local community college told me when I wanted to withdraw from the fall after spending the summer working as an electrician’s helper and finding my passion over 37 years ago. So how do we change perception? Ultimately, it’s up to us as parents to help our kids make informed decisions. This starts with a clear understanding of what various careers entail. A great way to do this is career fairs. Bring Back the Trades, Inc presents Skilled Trades Exhibitions which are geared towards young men and women who want to learn more about career opportunities in construction, automotive, manufacturing and service. They feature real tradespeople showing young adults how to use the tools of the trade in a safe, hands-on way that gives kids a greater understanding of what that trade encompasses.
