In 2016 I was hired by Perfect World to deploy and operate this game. They flew me up to Seattle and I lived in a hotel for a while, learning everything I could from Motiga.
We launched this game. Motiga was in bad shape. Their OPs people left, and they tried to hire me. I declined that position but still worked for them remotely supporting their environments. Ultimately the studio closed and I was left alone supporting the game. When we decided to close the game, I was the one to shut down the servers. I made sure to let everyone finish their last game. We sunset Motiga and I archived the source code.
Years later I’m told to pull the code and work with Abstraction to get it working again. We get a proof of concept running. We agree on a new backend architecture. I set up all the infra, they connected their CI system, and we’ve beenworking on it since.
Abstraction has been great to work with. Lot of fans real excited about this game. I think it’s a fun game and am hopeful it does better this time around. We have crossplay, multiple game server regions, and highly available infrastructure.
With my skills, I was able to (once again) take a cloud native app developed by a 3rd party and get it working in a hybrid on-prem/multi-cloud environment for a huge cost savings. Here’s hoping Gigantic does better this time around.
