I’m vlogging at #RelativityFest. I’m happy to say that my camera is coming with me for another fun vlog. This year I expect to have even more great content since I’ll be traveling with energetic people from vdiscovery. For some of them, it will be their first RelativityFest and I can’t wait to capture their reactions. If you see me walking around with my camera, wave and smile. If you have something to say, I’ll be happy to get you in the video. I very often hear the mantra that “Technology is neither good nor bad, it’s just a tool.” This is true but it covers over a rationalization. We need to realize when we look at the below that we have woefully harnessed the power of technology vs. it’s potential. And most of technology value creation (judging by the market cap of many Internet and Device companies) has come at the expense of things good for humanity by using tech to exploit human weakness and generate money for the few. Life has been and is being stolen through addiction driven by algorithms using cohorts and social proof. These are powerful NLP techniques used against us to get us to do what others make money from (and I mean Neuro-Linguistic Programming not the NLP from AI). This is not technology’s fault- this is the moral failing of the companies of this last wave of the Internet. It says more about the people who run them and their values and the people that join up with them for money and “hard problems” instead of missions and wellness creation for human beings. So technology IS just a tool, but those who have controlled it most have done us far more of a disservice because their own worldview has focused on their own advancement and promotion over the potential of technology (and AI) to help human suffering. Most of those selfies made us less happy. Most of those videos come at the expense of not being “present” and getting a cheap copy of the experience which we may never even watch more than once. And most of our “reading” isn’t even reading but stimulation which is quickly forgotten but the time is lost. We need something better than this for this current generation and the next. And I believe we will find it as we hold those accountable for the epic polution of human experience that is the hallmark of too many large, consumer tech companies. #YearofAccountability
This video makes me very sad. As someone who works in technology, it's disheartening to see how it's being used not to enhance our lives but to detach us from real experiences. As the new year begins, nobody hugs, kisses, or toasts. They just film. Technology wasn't meant for this... ___ ♻️ If you found this helpful, repost it to spread awareness about using technology to enrich, not replace, our real-life experiences. This video makes me very happy! As someone who works in technology, it's exciting to see how it's being used to enhance our lives and to enrich the mundane human experiences. It's also absolutely amazing to see that so many people can afford computational devices with the capabilities that would have been considered absolute science-fiction as little as 50 years ago. As the new year begins, people hug, kiss and toast, of course, but such content would not go viral, cause it does not fit into the narrative of the techno-pessimists. People film the experience, so they can share it with hundreds of friends and family that are far away. And thus foster the bond that would have been drastically weaker if technology was not here to help. Every person at this video has some more people in their mind, who they would like to have by their side as the New Year begins. Each of those people uses technology to bond with their friends, family and their communities. So, let's film, how people film, get sad about it and get a bunch of likes! Problem - solved! Technology was meant for this too, but the beauty of it is that is was also meant for many other things. You can use it any way you want. Technology and freedom go hand in hand. they support and reinforce each other. ___ ♻️ If you found this helpful, repost it to spread awareness about using technology to enrich our real-life experiences. Thanks, Marc Vidal for sharing it a few days ago.
