🤝 Yesterday, I had the privilege to attend the NORDEEP Summit event: a melting pot of ideas and collaboration that reinforced why the Nordic countries are at the forefront of innovation! 📈 It was enlightening to learn that deep tech startups, although requiring longer R&D cycles and significant capital, are just as likely to succeed as their tech counterparts (10% general survival rate), having much higher ROI figures. This is crucial as the time to market for deep tech can be substantial (7-10 years according to BCG, McKinsey, TechCrunch) due to their complex and ground-breaking nature vs 3-5 years on the non deep tech startup. 👥 The event highlighted the strength of Nordic collaboration, particularly in the political arena, which lays a solid foundation for their strong innovation capabilities. 👩💻 Notably, Sweden is recognized for having one of the highest numbers of unicorns per capita globally (8 unicorns per million people according to Bloomberg). Moreover, the European Innovation Scoreboard consistently marks these nations as leading innovators, a testament to their strategies and policy frameworks that support innovation. 📚 A fascinating aspect discussed was the role of student exchange programs between Nordic countries, enhancing their success by fostering a well-connected and educated workforce. Additionally, regional clusters were pointed out as crucial powerhouses driving the digital revolution, with a focus on deep tech sectors that demand highly specialized skills and collaboration. 🗺 It’s evident that while the North excels, Southern Europe may need to ramp up collaboration and integration within their ecosystems. The establishment of initiatives like the NATO Innovation Fund (NIF), aiming to pool resources across Europe to propel deep tech, is a step in the right direction. 💸 This €1 billion venture capital fund is set to make significant strides in supporting deep tech businesses and VCs over its 15-year lifespan. The networking opportunities at the event were unparalleled. 🗣 I met over 20 remarkable entrepreneurs, business angels, and ecosystem boosters on a very private and open minded setting. 🤗 I’m excited to follow up and explore how we at Evolution | Innovation Forward can work together to secure more funding for deep tech startups and get even more involved in this thriving ecosystem 👌 Especial thanks Magnus Rehn and Ari Jonsson for all the insigths 😉

🎉I'm going to Tokyo🎌!!!🎉 The Team at e-PORT will be at this years SusHi Tech Challenge at the Tokyo Big Sight to pitch in their semi-finals~ We'll also have a booth exhibit which I'll be at - please come say hi if you're around! はじめまして, どうぞ、よろしく お願(ねが)いします in advance! Can't wait to meet you all. 😋 About SusHi Tech Tokyo 2024: 📆 May 15th & 16th 📍 Tokyo Big Sight, West Exhibition Halls 1 & 2 Asia's largest and Japan's only global innovation conference that creates "new encounters" with both domestic and international startup ecosystems to solve the common global urban issues. Various stakeholders, including leading startups from Asia and around the world, investors, large corporations, countries/cities, and student entrepreneurs, will gather in Tokyo to foster business open innovation with huge social and economic impact. --- eLSA will make a phenomenal impact in reducing emissions, delays and wastage in every port around the world. By transiting the Maritime Supply Chain into a digital ecosystem, crucial information that used to pass through multiple hands(manually and across time-zones) before getting to key stakeholders can now be seamlessly, instantaneously, and securely accessed by relevant parties. The long-tail of MSMEs that make up the majority of the ecosystem can begin to collect and utilise their data through this digital transformation that eLSA enables. This creates new value as it then becomes possible to harness that data to optimise, automate, and develop AI applications for more efficiency. This is the greatest technological transfer the world will ever see. Lay witness or participate in building the Digital Maritime Ecosystem, it’s happening. Get your tix here: https://lnkd.in/gEJcNYW8

🙌 Welcome back to Startup Wednesdays, featuring #VCs, #founders & #operators here in South-East Asia. For this week, we have Brian Chen, Associate at XA Network 💭 How does XA Network source and identify potential investment opportunities? The XA team actively conducts market research and attends various industry events to identify high-potential startups in Southeast Asia. Additionally, the network leverages the expertise and networks of its members, who are tech leaders and bring the best of smart capital to the region. 💭 What sets XA network apart from other investors or VC firms operating in Southeast Asia? XA has assembled a cohort of accomplished industry leaders, empowering our members to access the collective expertise for making informed investment choices. Moreover, founders can leverage the knowledge of XA members for strategic decision-making, including critical hiring processes and navigating collaborations with major tech partners. 💭 What are some challenges or risks unique to investing in the Southeast Asian tech ecosystem? In general, we found that expansion across the region can present complexities for startups due to the diverse markets and regulatory environments, which will require tailored strategies for each market. Low relative middle income levels in SEA are also a challenge for startups, as it results in a lower willingness to pay, affecting pricing and market adoption. 💭 Are there any notable trends or emerging technologies that you believe will have a significant impact on the tech landscape in Southeast Asia? In recent times, several industries in Southeast Asia have experienced strong tailwinds, benefiting from various factors: 🔌 Electrical Vehicles: The region has witnessed significant momentum in the electric vehicle (EV) sector due to government grants and renewed commitments to reducing carbon emissions. This has led to the emergence of more EV brands, infrastructure players, and software companies, contributing to the growth of a sustainable transportation ecosystem. 🍃 Climatetech: There has been a notable surge in climate tech solutions in Southeast Asia, driven by a renewed focus on circular economic practices and sustainability. Startups in the waste management sector and circular sector are aligned with the region's growing emphasis on sustainability and responsible consumption. #singapore #venturecapital #southeastasia #investment #climate #ev

I barely post something on SM, so forgive my a bit TLDR post this time. I'd like to share some of my thoughts after participating in the South Summit 2024 conference in Madrid. - South Summit is 'the place to go' when you think about being active as an investor on a Spanish-speaking markets. You can easily set up important relations there. - Thanks for 'zillions' of great talks I've had with founders and fellow VCs from All Iron Ventures, FJ Labs, Samaipata, JME Ventures, Antai Ventures, 360 Capital, Athos Partners, Balderton Capital, 10X Capital, 4Founders Capital just to name a few. - Networking meetings at this event are probably equally important like merits. 😉 - It seems like the whole startup and VC market (and it's everywhere) is equally excited and concerned by the fast development of AI. We probably still cannot imagine how co-pilots and overall, generative AI will influence our everyday life in 3-5 years. - When it comes to the quality of startups presenting there, I have got a strange impression that I have already seen the vast majority of them. Different names, different countries, same ideas. However, some of them present great initial traction so I wish them luck and keep fingers crossed (I'm talking about you Shakers 😉). - There's a will from VCs to invest in AI-supported projects. The rule of thumb is that such platforms must constitute a separate whole and solve the problem from beginning to end. A common opinion among VCs is that large players will rather buy smaller startups that provide their clients with an end-to-end solution. - HR Tech, FinTech, ClimaTech and new wave of Customer solutions are still sexy for VCs. Marketplaces gain new superpowers by using generative AI. - Madrid is a beautiful city... at least this is what I think, because I had no time to visit it properly. So, South Summit... see you next year 😉 #SouthSummit24
