The second round of voting in the French legislative elections takes place tonight (Sunday 7 July in France). Voting ends at 6:00pm in towns and small cities and at 8:00pm in big cities. At 8:00pm local time (which is 6:00am tomorrow morning here in New Zealand) pollsters will issue initial projections based on the early results from polling stations that closed earlier in the day. Historically, these have been fairly reliable. A week ago, Marine Le Pen’s National Rally came first, although we've seen some major moves from other parties since then which could stop them winning a majority in the second round. Over 200 candidates from the left-wing alliance and President Emmanuel Macron’s centrist group have dropped out of the run-offs, which means there'll be more one-on-one races and less splitting of votes. That'll make it difficult for the National Rally to achieve an overall majority, which means the most likely scenario is a hung parliament.
