With Parliament starting a new five-year term, it's time to select a new leadership.    Following June's European elections, MEPs will elect a new President next week.    The President represents the Parliament when dealing with other organisations, oversees its work and chairs plenary sessions.   Discover how the President of the European Parliament will get elected: https://europa.eu/!Xbfqpj

  • How the European Parliament elects its President: The President is elected directly by MEPs. An absolute majority of votes cast is needed to win. The vote is done by secret ballot in a maximum of four rounds.

A bit like how a new pope is chosen by the (insider) cardinals. Why a secret ballot?

the Lisbon Treaty has given to The Parliament the power to stand above the Commission, yet we have seen very little evidence the Parliament to exercise it's power. The way the President of the Commission is elected is clear and grave infringement of democracy
