After the #SummerGameFest, many fans expressed dissatisfaction with the lack of major announcements and trailers from larger AAA game studios. The event showcased updates and reveals for games like Dragon Ball Sparking! Zero, Sonic X Shadow Generations, and LEGO Horizon Adventures, viewers were disappointed by the focus on smaller game studios and indie games. Many fans criticized the overlong Valorant announcement and the absence of anticipated AAA titles. On June 8, #GeoffKeighley posted a feedback poll on X, which received over 220,000 votes. The results showed that 39.8% rated the event "D or Below," while only 9.1% gave it an "A." I recently attended my first ever blockbuster larp - and when playing any kind of new game/gaming experience, I keep *copious* notes, to help remember what it can feel like to a first-timer. There was a *lot* to edit down regarding notes, reflections and observations about this one - so, for anyone curious about these kind of games, the first in a series of blogposts is here: https://wp.me/pabJeT-Ag

Let's talk about the impact of celebrities getting involved in video game performances! It's no secret that games featuring celebrities have had mixed results in the past. While there have been some standout performances, like Martin Sheen amazing work in the Mass Effect trilogy, many celebrity appearances have been lackluster. Acting in games has come a long way with the advancements in technology, allowing for more realistic performance capture. Games like Red Dead Redemption 2 have pushed the boundaries in this regard. However, there have also been recent examples of poor celebrity performances, for example in Mortal Kombat 1. These performances can undermine the overall experience of the game. So, what are your thoughts on celebrity involvement in video games? Who is your favorite celebrity appearing in the game? https://lnkd.in/e7fmiMC5

With more than 15 animation productions or films focused on games on the platform, Netflix had a great year in relation to the games segment and apparently it will only increase in 2024. In 2023, 40 games were released on the Netflix Games platform (including Rockstar Games's hit Grand Theft Auto Trilogy), and there are 16 new games coming to the platform, including games that are successful in the industry, such as Sonic Mania, Hades, Katana Zero, in addition to original games themed around platform series, such as Rebel Moon. In the comments I add an image with the biggest game series that exists on Netflix, proving the popularity of the gamer community within the platform and how it has only grown. #Gaming #gamingindustry #Netflix #streaming #marketing

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate has by far the most number of playable characters of any 2D fighting game, yet somehow maintains a reputation as one of the most balanced. Even at one of the most recent supermajors, Genesis 9, there was not a single repeat in character pick among the top 16 finishers. This is a big departure from the balance of previous Smash titles which were completely dominated by a select few characters. What changed? In an interview with Smash’s director, Masahiro Sakurai, (https://lnkd.in/g7kjFNt4) he mentioned that Ultimate is the first game in the series where he wasn’t directly involved in adjusting character stats. Here are a few key takeaways: 1. Splitting up balancing work between a few project leads is problematic because their bias will be reflected in what they balance —> each member of the balancing team should have a broad understanding of the entire system 2. Designers must consider every context through which players can interact with the system —> Brawl’s ~4-person balancing team primarily playtested 4-player battles, which led 1 on 1 balance to suffer 3. Playtesting must utilize representative samples by incorporating players from all kinds of backgrounds —> Ultimate brought in pro-players as a core part of the balancing team 4. Balancing should be data-driven and methodical —> the size of Ultimate’s planning and monitoring teams was much greater than in previous titles But we should keep in mind that, perfect balance in a game is never desirable. Some imbalance add a level of uncertainty that makes different elements of the game feel more unique. Check out two amazing investigations into this topic here: - How “Bad” Balance Can Be A Good Thing by Adam Millard (https://lnkd.in/g93Safzj) - The Unbalanced Design of Super Smash Brothers by Forrest Smith (https://lnkd.in/g93Safzj)

Feeling nostalgic lately? Remasters and remakes are all the rage these days, covering classics from the 90-00's era like Tomb Raider, Max Payne, or Metal Gear Solid, to later hits that pushed gaming into the mainstream like The Last of Us, Hitman, or even Epic Mickey! As game development becomes pricier, lengthier, and riskier, the industry is leaning heavily on this safer strategy: revamping cherished classics to appeal to nostalgic players, spanning generations. What game would you love to see remastered or remade? #gamingindustry #remaster #remake
