Here’s what we’re reading this week: 💡 A Newzoo report found that the vast majority of video game players are spending the most time playing older, established games, rather than seeking out new experiences. According to Newzoo, the biggest competition that publishers will face going forward will be Fortnite and Roblox, thanks to their unique content pipelines. With both games relying on audiences to create new experiences, both games remain fresh and consistently engaging for their players. Looking at many of the hit mobile games recently, it's clear that a lot of them take inspiration from PC, console games, or others, creating fantastic mobile versions. A prime example of this trend is the rise of casual battle royale games with a cartoonish art style, such as Stumble Guys by Kitka Games Oy which got acquired by Scopely, which drew inspiration from Fall Guys by Mediatonic Games, and Eggy Party by NetEase Games, which targeted the Chinese market with the same theme. Fall Guys introduced a fresh concept, and Stumble Guys quickly followed with a mobile version that has been incredibly successful, boasting over 300 million downloads and an estimated revenue of over $250 million USD+. Eggy Party, focusing on the Chinese audience, is reportedly nearing $1 billion in revenue as per some estimate market reports. What this shows is there's a big opportunity in the gaming market to adapt and innovate on exciting ideas for different platforms like mobile, Roblox, Fortnite, or specific regions. Recent successes demonstrate that taking a great concept and reimagining it for a new audience or platform can lead to impressive results. Instead of taking risk lot of companies follow what's working and execute in a perfect way for different marketing and are being super successful. How do you check out and recharge? I’m a gamer. My favorite genre is single player first-person shooters like Far Cry, Days Gone, and Last of Us. I love to get immersed in a story based game that feels like a “movie that you can play” and check out for a while. Fellow dads know what I mean. And I also know games. For over 25 years, I’ve had the opportunity to work for most of the top video game companies in the world. I’ve conducted exploratory, concept, advertising, packaging, and play test research projects for Console, PC and Mobile games in every genre from sports, to medical, to dancing, world building, to RPG, shooter and Star Wars. Although I don’t play all of these types of games, I know more than enough to hold my own in an in-depth conversation with hardcore gamers. But I don’t play multiplayer games. I can’t. I don’t last even seconds out there – I die instantly in games like Call of Duty, Fortnite, Halo. The people that play those games have more time (kids and teens) and/or a greater desire to spend the time to get good at these games. They’re too good (my kids included. They get me every time.) And I don’t have the time or the inclination to get better. And playing games that I will never be good at is not relaxing or refreshing for me I know what I like and, thankfully, I don’t have to be good at multiplayer games to do Gen Z market research on behalf of game developers.  How do you check out and recharge? #genz #qualitativeresearch #gaming #videogames #FPS

For brands, Fortnite is much more than a game, Fortnite changed when Epic games released Fortnite Creative four years ago. "𝗖𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲" is an in-game toolkit for players to make sandbox games inside Fortnite. And because of Creative, Fortnite is already much more than a game It's already a place where players find games and developers (& brands) find players. Their players are 𝗵𝗶𝗴𝗵𝗹𝘆 𝘀𝗼𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘁-𝗵𝘂𝗻𝗴𝗿𝘆 with over 𝟱𝟬𝟬 𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝘆𝗲𝗿 𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁𝘀, massive PC presence and the largest console player base is the best most vibrant place for developers to find an audience quickly and publish new games. Is Sony avoiding Free-to-Play Multiplayer games in its Live Service Model? About a third of their State of Play event was dedicated to Concord, Sony’s upcoming hero shooter. Suprise Suprise, Concord won’t be Free to Play. Rather it will follow the Helldivers 2 strategy: launching at a $40 price point. There is an interesting opinion piece on Gamesindustry.biz that dives much deeper into what this may mean for Sony, and the effects on the game lifecycle. To pull some interesting quotes from the article: ‘’ Sony is making things a bit harder for itself by avoiding free-to-play – but its calculation that this approach will lead to a more sustainable live service business in the medium to long-term may be well founded’’. ‘’ The decision of whether or not to charge up-front for the game has knock-on effects across the design of the game’’. ‘’ Sony has been watching the Hoyoverse cash roll in on PlayStation; it sees and understands how F2P works and what it requires and has nonetheless made a choice to eschew that approach’’. It being an opion piece, all we can do at this point is make educated guesses about the Live Service Model Sony is going to employ. Looking back to 2023 where we’ve seen Free-to-Play games being shut down for reasons other than not enough players e.g., Rumbleverse, Knockout City, Apex Legends Mobile and more. Combined with games that have become platforms themselves – Fortnite, Roblox etc. that people keep coming back to, it may make sense to charge an entry fee for a live service game.
