Every season, there's #sportsbusiness talk about big markets, small markets and which teams networks would prefer in the championship series. More than New York or L.A., it's the number of games that matters most. Six or more is good. This season, however, is turning into the doomsday scenario for Disney, which is showing the NBA and NHL Finals. Both best-of-seven series stand at 3-0, meaning the possibility for a double sweep exists for the first time since 1998. Here's Anthony Crupi with more: https://lnkd.in/egW7NKcQ

The next round of our National Basketball Association (NBA) playoff partnership head-to-head matchups pits the Eastern Conference 4-seed Cleveland Cavaliers against the 5-seed Orlando Magic. For this comparison, we chose to look at a prospective rather than active partner for each team with Hard Rock Digital (Hard Rock Bet). Hard Rock Bet has been making a big push into the online sportsbook space and managed to set themselves up as primary provider for the entire state of Florida. They are also operating in Ohio, a state with significantly more competition from all the big players like DraftKings Inc., FanDuel, Bet MGM and Caesars Sportsbook & Casino. Given that Hard Rock has a near monopoly in the space in Florida, we evened the playing field for this comparison by looking at how each team's fans' spending compares to general spending in their metro area rather than raw spending totals. Even with the playing field leveled, the Magic were still able to take a decisive victory here, with their fans spending 465% of general Orlando residents per person compared to 329.27% for the Cavaliers. Hard Rock is getting into sports partnerships, and is currently working with the Florida Panthers. Would it would make sense for them to invest in some of the competitive markets like Ohio as well to win some market share from the big players?

Is the NHL making a big bet on Web3? Today, the NHL has officially launched their digital collectibles platform First thoughts: I was very surprised to one of the biggest hockey personalities, Ryan Whitney post in support of the platform. I wouldn’t be surprised if more hockey personalities followed. The digital collectibles market is oversaturated, but brands like DraftKings have seen success with a utility-driven approach. The utility that emerges from this platform is still up in the air and will be a key factor in its success. The NBA, NFL, and MLB’s collectibles initiatives have had limited success. It’ll be interesting to see if the NHL can innovate and distinguish their platform in this space

With it still being the NBA off-season, it's the perfect time for rankings(more specifically tier-rankings) Rankings are fun. It's entertaining. It's fun to argue and have long debates about pointless stuff like who would you rather have, Stephen Curry or LeBron James. But there's also a time when you may want something more. I love reading in-depth pieces to learn more about each player & people's thought processes on how they value things. That's where these tier rankings come in. They're easy to make & provide a much better outlook on the whole league to learn from a team-building point of view. And that's why, I'm creating my own 2023 NBA Tiers. To start the project off, this is an introduction to the criteria & an explanation of each tier. https://lnkd.in/e2rnCxzJ

The NHL and Diamond Sports Group have reached an agreement "that will keep local broadcasts for 11 teams on Bally Sports through the end of this season." The agreement, which was contained in a court filing made yesterday, is "subject to court approval." While there will be "a reduction in rights payments for some teams," the local rights for those 11 franchises "will revert back to the NHL at the end of this season." The NHL teams that are currently on Bally are: the Ducks, Hurricanes, Blue Jackets, Stars, Red Wings, Panthers, Kings, Wild, Predators, Blues and Lightning. Diamond also reached the same type of agreement with the NBA for the 15 teams under contract to the RSNs last month (AP, 12/20).NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly said of the agreement, "It’s a resolution that we are comfortable with in light of the totality of circumstances. It ensures that all our teams will be able to continue to broadcast their games to local fans throughout the balance of the season. Dave: Good news for our peers and brings near-term stability for local rights until 1st round of playoffs are completed for both NBA and NHL. MLB and Diamond are talking, and it is reported they may have a framework thru MLB season. Allows time to see "what's next" in this disruption. September 2024 NBA likely to lead the way in a world of limited/no black-outs and different territory restrictions (if any at all?)

Congratulations to Adam Silver and his team at the National Basketball Association (NBA) on a successful In-Season Tournament (IST). It was fascinating to watch public and media reaction shift from confused and skeptical to engaged and excited over the last six weeks. What I admire most about the IST is the way it has set a new standard for turning relatively low-value content – an early- or mid-season game – into a high-value asset. We’ve seen the National Hockey League (NHL) do this effectively with its Winter Classic and the National Football League (NFL) do it with overseas games, but the duration of the IST gives it a value that is unique in the American regular-season sports landscape. The proof is in the pudding: Ratings were up more than 20% across platforms compared to last November, and the league saw record November attendance. There’s now talk that the IST could be sold as a separate #broadcast or #streaming package when current NBA #mediarights deals with The Walt Disney Company and Warner Bros. Discovery expire in 2025. I expect the IST will spur a wave of #innovation by leagues to create more regular season excitement, which is a great thing for fans, teams, sponsors, and rights holders. https://lnkd.in/dqBmg_jM #sports #sportsbusiness #nba

🏀📈 NBA's In-Season Tournament Scores Big on TV Ratings! 🚀 Exciting news for basketball fans! The NBA's inaugural In-Season Tournament is shaking things up and reshaping the league's narrative. With a standout 93% increase in TV viewership for a recent Kings vs. Warriors game, the tournament is proving to be a game-changer. ESPN and #TNT are reporting a robust 26% spike in average viewership compared to last year, adding a fresh dynamic to the early season. Notably, the National Basketball Association (NBA)'s innovative approach includes consistent ticket pricing, ensuring an inclusive fan experience. As the tournament heads into crucial quarterfinals and semifinals, it's clear that the NBA's willingness to explore new formats is paying off. This forward-thinking initiative, introduced in July, aims to revitalize the regular season and pave the way for a dynamic future. Kudos to the National Basketball Association (NBA) for embracing change and keeping the game thrilling! 🌟🏀 #NBA #InSeasonTournament #BasketballRevolution #TVRatings #SportsInnovation

Why do ESPN and FS1 ignore sports like baseball on debate shoes? From 8 a.m.-2 p.m., ESPN had ZERO discussions about the start of the MLB playoffs… The obvious answer is that the networks know the NFL and NBA rule the day. But the question still remains—why do ESPN and FS1 pay hundreds of millions to air NHL, college basketball, MLB, tennis, golf, etc, and not spend some time talking about those sports as well? The answer is pretty simple. Data shows viewers change the channel or stop watching at a higher rate when they talk about those sports.

ESPN is launching Frozen Frenzy, an NHL version of NFL RedZone Why? In 2023, NHL viewership fell over 20% to 370,000 per game, while NFL RedZone attracts an estimated 5 million viewers every Sunday The catch? NFL RedZone's growth wasn’t just due to showcasing multiple football games; it allowed fans to easily track their fantasy football teams, which has quietly become a multi-billion dollar market Hockey has strong culture and social presence, but Fantasy Hockey lags due to the daily upkeep compared to football's weekly engagement According to the FSGA, of 60 million fantasy sports players, 79% play fantasy football vs 12% for fantasy hockey 'Frozen Frenzy' might boost viewership, attract sports betting enthusiasts, and ease blackout restrictions. Yet, it might not be the ultimate solution for growing viewership With an official launch on October 24th, I’m personally excited but curious to see how ‘Frozen Frenzy’ will impact NHL viewership and fan engagement #SportsBiz #NHLnews https://lnkd.in/eXEB_ze9
