How to directly help those impacted by the wildfires in Maui, from Hawaii Community Foundation (a member of The Funders Network.)

Lately, we've been reading a lot about the Maui wildfires. The wildfires have now taken over 100 lives (with many still missing) and burned over 3,000 acres of land— destroying families, homes, and livelihoods.   This tragedy is impossible for us to ignore. During the Fort McMurray fires, the Canadian Red Cross's text-to-donate campaign quickly raised over $1.6 million, showcasing the incredible potential of this channel in rallying aid during crises. 📣 The campaign utilized various channels such as social media, public service announcements, and carrier messaging, reaching unprecedented levels. 📆 Of the 233K+ unique donors, over 6,000 committed monthly donations, bolstering ongoing support for Red Cross relief efforts. 📲 Remarkably, 90% of text donations came from first-time donors, highlighting the channel's reach and effectiveness. Slovenia recently faced its worst natural disaster to date - floods and landslides that left 500 families without a home and damaged public infrastructure, impacting 2/3 of the country. Yesterday, I had the opportunity to volunteer and witness firsthand the resilience and solidarity of the Slovenian people. Despite the devastation, empathy and hope prevailed, as volunteers from different parts of the country came together to support those in need. More options for helping Hawaii for those inclined to do so

Hi friends! I've had folks reach out to make sure that we're ok. We're safe; we're on Oahu and the fires were on Maui. I'm sure you've seen some of the footage by now. Lahaina is devastated. They're already having issues with Fema, Red Cross and Salvation Army. If you would like to help the folks effected, here are some reliable sources that are getting resources directly to those in need.  1) Hawai'i Community Foundation - Maui Strong https://lnkd.in/gEYHgTjq Hawai'i Community Foundation has a track record of responsibly distributing funds to folks in the community to facilitate economic empowerment. 2) There's a huge need for donations of material goods. Getting items into Lahaina and getting them distributed where they need to go has been a challenge (this is where Fema is failing). You can send items directly to Maui Food Bank, 760 Kolu St, Wailuku, HI 96793. Their current biggest needs are baby formula and food, diapers and water. Toiletries, period care items and rice would probably also be good items to send. If you are shipping items directly to Maui, USPS has Priority Mail boxes that ship for less than $25.00 and will get there in 2-3 days. The way that the community is caring for each other reminds me a lot of the on the ground efforts in Mpls and St Paul during the Uprising, especially when the National Guard locked neighborhoods down and folks couldn't get groceries. Any assistance would be so helpful and greatly appreciated. And if you can't help right now, the need will still be there when you can. I can't donate anything until next month because business has been a bit slow. But recovery is going to be a marathon, not a sprint. Thanks!
