I always declared a “theme” for the year, something to strive for and rally around. It becomes part of the culture and creates a collective effort and enthusiasm. We live in a world that works against courage. We are taught to make things as simple as possible, remove all friction or errors, and then you don’t need to be courageous. For instance, don’t make that pizza from scratch – after all it could not work out. Just buy this microwave instant error free version and eliminate worry.
Or you could be courageous and take it on. Go ahead and make your own, and if you fail you will have learned a lot for the next time. And you might have fun doing this with other people.
The dictionary says courage is, “the quality of mind or spirit that enables a person to face difficulty, danger, pain without fear.” I would change this a bit to say some fear is appropriate if it doesn’t stop you from acting. Engage in something new, fresh, or challenging that requires compassion, empathy, curiosity, and care. Build the appropriate relationships along the way that enable you to succeed.
Are you ready to transform you company Culture?
It will take Courage.
It will take Commitment.
It will take Compassion.
It will take Empathy.
It will take Curiosity.
And along the way it will take caring for people, building relationships and engaging in new practices, habits, and traditions. And along the way you might have fun. Being serious in business does not mean being grim.
After years of building competitive Cultures in our own businesses by design, we are now offering it to other companies. While it takes courage to do this, we also know it works…because we’ve done it and accomplished some incredible outcomes along the way.
