One of the toughest things to do in marketing is stay focused. The Marketing Intelligence podcast had a great episode a few weeks ago about how top brands use triangulation, which means combining digital tracking, conversion lift studies, and marketing mix modeling to get a true picture of the effectiveness of their marketing spend. But what I really loved was a part of the conversation about focusing on a few key channels and not trying to do everything. I see a lot of clients trying to do too many things with too few resources, and result is that they don't do any of it well. They spend a huge portion of their budget creating material for and managing all their different channels, and they spread themselves so thin that they don't make an impact anywhere. In the podcast, Michael Kaminsky recommends focusing on just your one or few top performing channels and doing those really well and then, once you can't do any better with the channels you're in, scaling to additional platforms to add incremental revenue. And, of course, he recommends measuring and understanding how your different channels are contributing to your marketing performance to help make those decisions.
