May marks Asian Pacific American Heritage Month, which celebrates the histories of Americans from Asia and the Pacific islands of Melanesia, Micronesia and Polynesia. May was chosen to commemorate Asian American and Pacific Islanders from two key dates: May 7 and May 10. May 7, 1843, marks the arrival of the first Japanese immigrants to the United States. And May 10, 1869, or Golden Spike Day, recognizes the completion of the first transcontinental railroad in the U.S., which had significant contributions from Chinese workers. There are various ways to celebrate Asian Pacific American Heritage month. We can start with learning about their traditions, food, and music. Host a book club featuring an Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) author or a film screening featuring an AAPI director. Explore and support local AAPI businesses. At work, provide learning opportunities, honor the culture through employee events, or host a fireside chat about Asian representation. These are a few of the many ways we can honor and support Asian American and Pacific Islanders. How will you celebrate Asian Pacific American Heritage month? #AsianPacificAmericanMonth #LearnAndSupport #CelebrateAndHonor

A Proclamation on Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islanders Heritage Month, 2024 "This month, we celebrate the Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AA and NHPI) communities, whose ingenuity, grit, and perseverance have pushed our great American experiment forward [...] Our Nation was founded on the idea that we are all created equal and deserve to be treated equally throughout our lives. We have never fully realized this promise, but we have never fully walked away from it either. As we celebrate the historic accomplishments of AA and NHPIs across our Nation, we promise we will never stop working to form a more perfect Union. " - @potus --- A look at the History of AAPI Month --- May is Asian/Pacific American Heritage Month – a celebration of Asians and Pacific Islanders in the United States. A rather broad term, Asian/Pacific encompasses all of the Asian continent and the Pacific islands of Melanesia (New Guinea, New Caledonia, Vanuatu, Fiji and the Solomon Islands), Micronesia (Marianas, Guam, Wake Island, Palau, Marshall Islands, Kiribati, Nauru and the Federated States of Micronesia) and Polynesia (New Zealand, Hawaiian Islands, Rotuma, Midway Islands, Samoa, American Samoa, Tonga, Tuvalu, Cook Islands, French Polynesia and Easter Island). Like most commemorative months, Asian/Pacific American Heritage Month originated with Congress. The month of May was chosen to commemorate the immigration of the first Japanese to the United States on May 7, 1843, and to mark the anniversary of the completion of the transcontinental railroad on May 10, 1869. The majority of the workers who laid the tracks were Chinese immigrants.
