🌍 Inspiring Stories in Africa, about the positive impact of Gifts That Give Back 🤗 August Inspiring Impact Series 1#: preserving #wildlife in Zambia 🇿🇲 Every year, thousands of Zambia’s iconic wild animals are killed or wounded by wire snares set by poachers. The snares catch lions, giraffes, elephants and other animals. As the animal tries to free itself, the wire tightens, resulting in a slow and agonizing death by strangulation. 💡 A small women-run workshop creates handcrafted jewelry out of these snare wires collected by anti-snaring patrols, and from locally sourced natural materials. The proceeds go towards funding anti-snaring patrols that remove snares and rescue injured animals. ◾ Dataset could help Pastoralism in Kenya. Pastoralist communities in Kenya face a myriad of challenges that threaten their traditional way of life and livelihoods. One significant issue is the recurrent droughts that plague the region, leading to water scarcity and insufficient pasture for livestock. Climate change exacerbates these challenges, causing unpredictable weather patterns and further intensifying the frequency and severity of droughts. This not only affects the economic stability of the communities, heavily reliant on livestock for sustenance and income, but also perpetuates a cycle of poverty as families find it challenging to recover from the loss of their primary assets. ◾ In response to the numerous challenges faced by pastoralist communities, DIVA Protocol launched Diva Donations third conditional donation campaign, focusing on supporting #pastoralist communities in #Kenya. This initiative is designed to provide anticipatory cash transfers to those facing the disproportionate impact of climate-change-induced droughts. The campaign strategy involves a detailed assessment of vegetation health using the #NDVI after the Mar-Apr-May 2024 rainy season. Funds will be disbursed if the period-end NDVI suggests insufficient vegetation to sustain livestock during the upcoming dry season. A key highlight of this campaign is the use of a smoothed NDVI dataset published by #FEWSNET. It provides jobs and education to help make their communities more resilient to the climate crisis. However, the biggest issue holding it back is the intermittent and unreliable power and internet in rural Kenya. Frequent power outages, ageing infrastructure, bandwidth limitations and connectivity problems caused by extreme weather events severely hinder our ability to facilitate critical environmental education. In our new ABC Campaign, we aim to do three things. 1) Acquire a Starlink satalite connection to gain reliable, unlimited, high-speed internet access. 2) Boost our solar power and battery storage capabilities – we currently have only two small panels. 3) Commission geospatial satellite data from Orbify to identify the best places to plant trees and crops, and other data, which will help save lives.
