Climate concern is higher in northern #EU member states. There is a striking difference in public concern about climate change between the EU’s north, and its east and south. Impacts: • Green parties will continue to struggle to supplant traditional parties, some of which are adopting green policies. • Voters may switch to green parties if they suspect mainstream parties’ genuine commitment to the environment. • Pro-climate measures are already encountering push-back from voters unwilling to change behaviour or viewing environmentalism as elitist. • Fossil-fuel suppliers will intensify disinformation campaigns encouraging popular scepticism about climate science. 2023 Eurobarometer on European perceptions of climate change: 🌡 94% of the Greek public (2nd in the EU) agrees or tends to agree that tackling climate change and environmental issues should be a priority in order to improve public health. 🌡 86% of the Greek public agree or tend to agree that more public financial support should be given to the #EnergyTransition, even it this means reduced subsidies to #FossilFuels. Yes, Greek climate policies are below the standards set by citizens themselves. No doubt, climate perceptions do not match #ClimateAction (at least in Greece). 🌊 Historic Ruling: ITLOS Calls for Ocean and Climate Protection 🌏 The International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea (ITLOS) has issued a landmark opinion, urging nations to take all necessary measures to prevent greenhouse gas pollution of the oceans. Small island states celebrate this as a "historic moment" for climate justice. Key Points: 🔹 States must reduce emissions to protect marine environments, as per the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea. 🔹 Measures should align with the Paris Climate Agreement, aiming to limit global warming to 1.5°C. 🔹 Countries are also obligated to restore damaged ecosystems. 🔹 Emissions must not harm other nations, highlighting a duty of due diligence.
