Thank you Authority Magazine Yitzi Weiner for spotlighting our organization’s President, Cayley Tullman, who showcased Tullman Community Ventures’ unwavering commitment to driving meaningful and exponential change in the health, economic, music & the arts, and national security spaces. At TCV, we firmly believe in the power of collaboration and partnership with community-based organizations to build and scale solutions that address challenging problems within defined timeframes. Cayley notes, "If we could all learn to disagree better and recognize that we have so much more in common with one another than we have differences, I think we would make a lot more progress on any issue, no matter how challenging the topic.” This sentiment underscores our belief that connection and understanding are essential in driving positive change. By incentivizing cooperation across sectors and leveraging emerging technologies, Tullman Community Ventures strives to develop sustainable solutions that enable lasting change. Our goal is not only to address immediate needs, but also to pave the way for a more resilient and equitable future for generations to come. RHODES CAMPAIGN FOR PRESIDENT REEL OF THE DAY - DID OBAMA SQUANDER AN OPPORTUNITY? Try putting yourself in the mindset of 2007. Barack Obama was an interesting but ultimately doomed outsider candidate whose main selling point was that he voted “no” on the Iraq invasion. Social media was a frivolous diversion for college students. Donald Trump was a gameshow host. I was a lefty! In 2007, sixteen years ago, John McWhorter and I had our first conversation, and I wanted to revisit it to examine just how much—or how little—things had changed. In our conversation (you can watch the whole thing here), I sometimes seem to play the role of the experienced black progressive taking a young colleague to task for his conservatism. I thought I knew whereof I spoke. John had published two books—Losing the Race and Winning the Race—that cut against the conventional wisdom in black intellectual circles, and he did so from what seemed to me to be a right-of-center perspective. I had been there before, when I was an outspoken black conservative in the ‘80s and ‘90s. Since that time, I had managed to convince myself that I had changed my ways and come “back home” politically, to where all right-minded black people belonged. Well, sixteen years is a long time. In this clip, we watch our younger selves debate whether America is really ready to “move beyond race.” It sounds almost quaint now. As I remark below, Obama’s presidency seemed to offer us just such an opportunity, and it was squandered. I haven’t given up hope that the transracial humanism I then espoused could one day become the common sense of the nation. I think it’s the only way out of our current mess. But listening back, I’m struck by how much closer we seemed to that ideal in 2007 than we do in 2023. Video 9:37 Passionate About US Politics? Before we finish our “Meet Addy” display, we want to share a “Looking Back” with you all – just like in the original historical character books! Thank you to our very own assistant researcher, Leah Jenkins, for her hard work! ___ Looking Back: The Underground Railroad and Freedom By: Leah Jenkins, Assistant Researcher The Underground Railroad was a symbolic title for the secret network of houses, paths, and people that assisted fleeing enslaved in obtaining freedom outside of slave states. The system comprised of roads, trails, rivers, canals, bays and the Atlantic Coast, stretched as far north as Canada and as south as Mexico and the Caribbean. Beginning in the late eighteenth century, conductors – such as formerly enslaved individuals and white abolitionists – assisted freedom seekers or “passengers” in navigating the convoluted and treacherous routes. The most notable conductor was Harriet Tubman. A former enslaved individual herself, Tubman used her expertise in the railroad to aid dozens. Outside of the perilous environmental circumstances, conductors and passengers dodged federal marshals, slave catchers and plantations. Despite liberation, freedom came with its own hardships. Newly emancipated African Americans endured racial discrimination, job competition and indentured servitude. The Underground Railroad lost steam on January 1, 1863, when President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Declaration, announcing that “all people held as slaves are, and henceforth shall be free.” It is estimated that nearly 100,000 people escaped slavery through the Underground Railroad from 1810 to 1850. 📺 Axios co-founder and CEO Jim VandeHei was on MSNBC’s Morning Joe to talk about America’s shifting media landscape. America is splintering into more than a dozen news bubbles based on ideology, wealth, jobs, age and location. This means where you get your news, the voices you trust, and even the topics and cultural figures you follow could be wholly different from the person sitting next to you. So instead of Red America and Blue America, we’ll have a dozen or more Americas — and realities. This will make understanding public opinion, and finding common agreement, even more complex and elusive. 🎥: MSNBC

As family dinners become less frequent, the tradition of "kitchen table talk" is also on the decline, particularly among Black families. This shift has resulted in fewer opportunities for open communication and shared experiences, which historically served as a platform for discussing important topics, including business, finance, and wealth-building. The Good Soil Forum, held in Dallas, TX, aimed to bridge this gap by providing a platform for Black entrepreneurs to connect, share experiences, and learn from each other. The forum featured engaging breakout sessions, inspiring speakers, and a pitch competition, all aimed at fostering a collaborative atmosphere and equipping attendees with the knowledge and resources to navigate a world often stacked against them. The forum's focus on financial literacy and wealth-building is particularly important for Black Americans, who face systemic barriers to financial literacy and economic security. The forum's commitment to fostering a thriving entrepreneurial community is a testament to the power of community and the importance of open communication in achieving financial success. What are your thoughts on the role of family dinners and kitchen table talks in fostering financial literacy and wealth-building? Do you believe that more emphasis should be placed on these conversations in today's fast-paced society?
