Yesterday Mind the Product Roadshow started in Amsterdam. In the coming days, I'll be sharing my key takeaways. Here are some from Ebi Atawodi inspiring keynote for product leaders – The Builder's Playbook.
1. Growth Mindset: Develop self-awareness and reflect on your strengths, weaknesses, and learning styles. Commit to continuous learning and stay curious to expand your knowledge. Embrace humility to better understand diverse perspectives.
2. Interconnected Functions: Foster collaboration between product, tech, UX, and business teams. Encourage team members to view their roles as part of an interconnected system rather than isolated functions.
3. Build Rapport: Engage in open communication to understand your colleagues at a personal level. Take time to learn about their values, fears, and priorities to build trust and rapport across functions. Try traffic light exercise with your team. Each colour represents a general mood. Red - drained, distracted, overwhelmed. Green - energised, happy, confident, inspired. Yellow - somewhere in between.
4. Operating Rhythms: Set up clear operating rhythms and cadences, such as weekly, monthly, and quarterly meetings. Documenting these processes provides consistency and streamlines workflows. In the lead meeting, dive into spicy topics first – three chilly – super hot topics.
5. Prioritization Frameworks: Maintain and regularly update backlogs of problems and goals. Use these to guide your team’s focus on the most important tasks and remain agile to pivot when necessary.
6. User-Centered Research: Continuously gather user feedback to understand their pain points from multiple perspectives. Use this data to inform strategic decisions and ensure solutions meet customer and business needs.
7. Socialize Visions: Communicate strategic visions thoroughly at all levels, from teams to leadership. Ensure alignment and buy-in for effective execution over long time horizons.
8. Culture of Ownership: Fostering ownership mentality where teams feel responsible for their work, rather than just "renting" tasks. This leads to better outcomes and accountability.
9. Onboarding Framework: Use the 3C’s model (Context, Comprehension, Conviction) to smoothly onboard yourself to a new org or team. Ensure you understand the context, align your comprehension with organizational and team goals, and establish conviction among stakeholders and teams.
10. Resilience: Adopt a surfing mindset when facing waves of change. Life involves constant waves of change that require bending and adjusting like a surfer riding the waves rather than trying to stop them. Instead of holding your breath, waiting for waves to go away and things to stabilize, embrace the change and be at peace with it.
