Memorial Day is fast approaching but what IS Memorial Day exactly? Memorial Day is an American holiday, observed on the last Monday of May, honoring the men and women who died while serving in the U.S. military. Memorial Day 2024 will occur on Monday, May 27. Originally known as Decoration Day, it originated in the years following the Civil War and became an official federal holiday in 1971. Many Americans observe Memorial Day by visiting cemeteries or memorials, holding family gatherings and participating in parades. That is the "official" definition. To me Memorial Day is my great grandfather, my grandfather, my aunts and Uncles, my cousins, my neighbors across the street, my college buddies, my coworkers, and my friends. They all served. They all did something I wasn't prepared to do. They all had various reasons for doing so and those reason aren't important. They literally signed up to put themselves in harm's way with the clear understanding that they may have to lay down their lives in some far-off country. Why? Because at their very core they believed in what it is to be American. They knew that freedom, by any definition, is not a given and it certainly isn't free. So this weekend while you grill out or attend a concert or whatever, please if only for a moment remember what Memorial Day is really all about. Our Freedoms depend on it. #thankyou #memorialday #memorialdayweekend #usa #love #america #memorial #mdw #like #memories #military #veterans #summer #family #redwhiteandblue #remember #freedom #happymemorialday #neverforget #honor #army #friends #sale #marines #navy #airforce #america #remember

A Highly Recommended read. #storiesmatter
I had a wonderful time last evening seeing and listening to Taylor Kiland and her co-author Judy Silverstein Gray at their book talk at The Bookmark in Neptune Beach, Florida. Their book 'UNWAVERING: The Wives Who Fought to Ensure No Man is Left Behind' is a beautifully--powerfully--written story of the emotional rollercoaster of wives with POW or MIA husbands. And how, during our long war in Vietnam, they persevered with unwavering faith and determination to not just learn the fate of the missing and imprisoned but to ensure no man was left behind. Whether you are interested in the era or learning about a different battle fought in Washington DC, 8,000 miles from Vietnam, you’ll satisfy both interests with this compelling book. More—maybe most—importantly, you’ll read a well-told story of women—contrary to the norms of the time—who stood up, demanded action, and would not be denied. A highly recommended read. Bravo Zulu to the authors. #vietnamwar #vietnamveterans #militaryhistory #military #defenseindustry #defensecontractors #intelligencecommunity #government #foreignpolicy #bookstoread

Why remember? The importance of children at Remembrance Day ceremonies. Remove our children from the comfort of their homes and devices to gather and pay respect and gratitude to those who fought and died for our peace, freedom, and democracy - for the very lives they have the privilege of living today. Show them what honouring the living, remembering the fallen, and thanking those who continue to serve looks like - a simple act of wearing a poppy as a symbol of our remembrance and hope. Our children are the future of this nation and land. We, not only as parents, but as adults, must teach that they have a civic duty and responsibility to uphold values - the very ones that those who came before them defended. Our young people need to learn from the courage, sacrifice, and commitment of service men and women - encourage them to strive to be worthy of a legacy that was entrusted to us. Our children will become the witnesses of their stories and the keepers of their memories, taking up the role in preserving history and honour. If we want them to be the visionaries of a better world and the creators of more peaceful tomorrows, it is we who must set the foundation upon which they build. May the act of remembrance encourage everyone to follow the examples and embody the spirit of those who came before us - inspiring each other with words, actions, and strength of heart. #remember #remembrance #wy20 #remembranceday #veteransday #remembereveryonedeployed #ally #war #rememberthosewhoserved #infantry #armistice #propatria #soldier #caf #soldiers #veteran #veterans #army #military #armedforces #specialforces #canadianarmedforces #allies #duty #respect #honour #service #freedom #neverforget #whatsyourtwenty

Tribe, brotherhood, community, network, body, family, camaraderie, etc... It comes in the form of many names. That alone should indicate the importance of having a network of support all around you. According to PhsychCentral.com, isolation increases a person's chance of death by 50% and is more harmful than smoking or obesity. Additionally, a "sense of connection" falls smack dab in the middle of Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs. Clearly, even the scientific world has identified and measured the need for human connection and how healthy it is for us. Galatians 6:2 says, "Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ." We have been called to support one another because we are designed with the need to fellowship and encourage each other. This is a piece of the bigger puzzle in the healing journey, but clearly an important piece. This is one of our goals at Wild Warrior Adventure through our programs: to build camaraderie and community through transparent, real conversations. We recognize the importance of this need for connection in everyone's lives. Build your network! Whether it be through a local group, church, neighbors, fellow warriors, networking groups, or wherever else you may socialize. Just don't do life alone! If you are struggling or hurting, please reach out to a friend, family member, confidant, or someone you can trust to listen. If you don't think you have that sort of connection, please call the Suicide and Crisis Line at 988. . . . #healingnetworks #mentalhealthawareness #ptsd #wildwarrioradventure #wildwarrioradv #wwa #veterans #warriors #network #community #faith #hope #love #military #army #navy #marines #airforce #coastguard #stayconnected

Non-Profit Executive / Community Builder / Advisor / Challenge Solver / Veteran & Military Spouse Advocate / Marine Corps Veteran
I do not have an emotional response to death. During my time in the United States Marine Corps, I dealt with death on an all-too-often basis. I have been a part of hundreds of military funeral details, flag foldings, memorials, ceremonies, and more. I even escorted a fallen Marine home to their final resting place. To do what needed to be done and not become overwhelmed by all of it, I learned to process it as a logistical movement. This removed any feelings and emotions from the picture and gave me the ability to process tragedy in a fluid manner. For those that served in any role that deals with death consistently, you understand this. For those that do not, this just sounds cold. This coping mechanism served me well while in uniform but has left me in a weird spot when it comes to processing personal relationships. You see, I hear that someone has passed away and I have no emotional reaction to it. Wow does this cause issues with friends and family that want to know what is wrong with me? I have been labeled as “emotionally constipated” and “dead inside”. I bring this up because I have lost a few family members recently and my no-response reaction has not come across well to others. What are some of the things that you do not respond to like “normal” people should? #military #veterans #emotions #death #copingmechanisms #veteranshelpingveterans #firstresponders #grief #mentalhealth #mentalhealthmatters #mentalhealthawareness
